April 2023 Hatch-A-Long

Thanks! 7 Light Sussex and 8 Bresse.

How are you getting on now? Have any more hatched yet? Your first one is a cutie!
Still just one hatched but I have 9 pips. The incubator is in my bedroom so I think they are planning to hatch in the middle of the night and wake me up! šŸ˜… I’m sure I will get at least one more hatched; I am so relieved that I will get some chicks after all the setbacks of this incubation!

Yes, it's such a relief! And exciting to have 9 pips. Good luck getting some sleep!

A first pip on the speckled egg. I have some due the 20th, 21, and the 22nd.

I'm hatching Bresse, too (just 4 eggs to see what they are like). I have got European Bresse, I'm not sure how they are different from the American ones :)
Well I'm in Ireland so mine are European as well! šŸ˜„

I started with them last year and so far I'm very impressed. I actually didn't really like them as chicks because they were a bit less friendly and way more smelly than my other chicks but since they've grown they've really become favourites. They seem to be particularly strong and healthy. They're super foragers. The cockerels are so gentle and easy to handle. The one we've kept for breeding is amazing with his hens. They have interesting personalities and so far they've been outperforming the Australorps with laying. Time will tell how they do in terms of longevity but so far I can definitely recommend them.

Still have 34 eggs in the bators, and 4 under my broody. I ordered a magic fly battery powered candler because my cell & flashlight didn’t allow me to see much when I candled in the coop. Will also help me when I hatch with my class since the darkest area of the room has no outlets. I am really hoping for 34 chicks out of the 38 that are left on day 10. Hatch is the last day of April!

Wow, thanks a lot! That's so interesting! I'm really looking forward to them šŸ™‚

My hatch is going great today, I have 9 chicks out, all Swedish Flowers. 6 are black & white and 3 are brown. Haven’t gotten any of the blue ones I wanted but there are still a few more pips. Honestly I am just grateful to have any at all right now! I have to say the new incubator really came through for me.

I might end up needing to assist on a few hatches cause my wrong end pip has still not hatched and I had one pip at the exact top of the egg, so I don’t see how she will be able to get out of that! Have never seen that before.

Glad you didn't give up on them! They are resilient little critters!

how long has it been for the wrong end pip? They can take up to 48 hrs since it is like an internal and external pip in one. If you are worried you can make the pip hole a TINY bit bigger so you know air is getting in. I had one that pipped just about in the middle of the air cell and it zipped a bit diagonal and got out just fine. I was worried about it.
