APRIL 26TH, TSC MILFORD NH CHICKEN SWAP:

awww, so sorry to hear that.

On Saturday when it was so hot, i lost one of my Nh reds (a 10 day old chick). I'm sure it was the heat, there was no other sign of anything wrong. I found her in the corner furthest from the light---at one point everyone was crowded there i think to get away from the light, and i think she got smothered. After that, i put extra pieces of cardboard across each corner to keep the chicks from collecting in corners. I also put a lower watt bulb in the lamp, and i've been checking frequently through each day to make any adjustments as the temp rises. I turned off the light for a half hour or so several times in the afternoon to let the brooder cool a few degrees. When the house gets hot, i found it's much harder to regulate the brooder temp. My older chicks are supposed to be down to 70 degrees now, but when my house is 85 degrees, that's impossible! 85 is fine for the little ones still, but i keep watching and making adjustments to make sure the temp didn't go higher in their brooder.
It's so sad to lose a chick. <hugs>

i shut the light out for a bit today in both brooders, inside and outside, couldnt take the heat myself, all are fine here so far. too hot to soon

want to trade the frizzled roo for the smooth feathered? i am up for that.

I hate to he's such a beautiful blue and for 10 weeks he has great feather and these huge feathered feet but I may have to because I can't stand watching him go after the two new chicks I put in with them. I know I should leave them for a little while to get used to each other but It breaks my heart and I keep taking him out. I put him with the adult hens he doesn't even know and he's fine with them but they would probably set him strait if he went after them

Sorry to hear about your BR, carey, and your chocolate game, Gypsy!

The little SLW is still doing great. I think I will name "her" Gloria although I'm still not sure I'll be keeping the little bugger. "She" has my other 3 older SL to compete with when "she" gets older, and "her" "sister". Plus if "she" is a he, he will not be staying here. The name totally goes against all my other Wyandottes since they all have natural names.

I'm having trouble getting the brooder hot enough tonight (go figure), most of the chicks seem OK with the temp it is at but there is just one that will not stop complaining about the temp. I have a stronger bulb that I could put in but it is much stronger and I think it would make it too hot in there. I'll have to buy an in-between bulb later today.

I kept a really close eye on the chicks in the brooder at work yesterday.
The hens that were loose hid under the dove hutch and hung out in the shade on the sides of the buildings. Luckily we didnt have too many kids yesterday chasing the animals around.

I'm having that trouble this morning. yesterday, i was trying to cool the brooder, and now i'm trying to get it warm enough! The house cooled down over night. i don't want to put in my hot bulb again, as the temp should be 80-85 now for my youngest batch (reducing 5 degrees per week). i do watch the chicks, but i also depend on the thermometer as my double check. I just looked, and everyone is sleeping on top of the thermometer! LOL

The house feels good temp now, and it's just right for the older chicks, so that's great. The plan is that they move to the coop by May 10th.

I did break down and put in the 200 watt bulb after all and the temp actually looks just right now. The chicks are happily wandering around and sleeping wherever they drop

yesterday even the one day old chick was wandering around in the mini coop, there was no way I could leave them inside!!! Today mom is keeping everyone warm, so much easier than a light!!!

going to have some chicks for this also , will know more after the merrimack swap what will be left for sale.
