APRIL 26TH, TSC MILFORD NH CHICKEN SWAP:

I made doubly sure the girls at home had plenty of water. Then went to work and made sure the crew(I am the chicken/poultry/water fowl lady) there had plenty of water as well. I felt so bad for them today.
The peacocks were even quiet. The guineas didnt notice the heat

One of Barred Rocks passed away this afternoon and I wonder if it somehow got over heated. She was in the brooder no light on and I made sure they had fresh water went out for the morning came back and she was dead. I am so sad. This is my first chick lost and she is the only one besides my bantam that had a name. RIP Betsy. sigh.

oh Carey I am so sorry,! This heat has been rough on all the animals,
I lost my Chocolate game cock to the heat also. big bummer.

And speaking of Roosters........ I have a young splash bantam roo that is 1/2 splash ee bantam, and 1/2 splash silkie that needs a flock of his own. I also have 2 blue silkies that hatched with him. I dont know the sex of the silkies. They act like girls, but the tail feathers are looking full for girls so i just cant tell. I think they will be going to the Scaticoke (sp) NY show this weekend with a friend, but if anyone is interested, pm me.

I use this avitar when I am having mood swings.
with the way things are going and now my foot, I feel like glinda when she asked dorothy if she was a good witch or a bad witch.

I never know which witch I am at any given time.

On Saturday when it was so hot, i lost one of my Nh reds (a 10 day old chick). I'm sure it was the heat, there was no other sign of anything wrong. I found her in the corner furthest from the light---at one point everyone was crowded there i think to get away from the light, and i think she got smothered. After that, i put extra pieces of cardboard across each corner to keep the chicks from collecting in corners. I also put a lower watt bulb in the lamp, and i've been checking frequently through each day to make any adjustments as the temp rises. I turned off the light for a half hour or so several times in the afternoon to let the brooder cool a few degrees. When the house gets hot, i found it's much harder to regulate the brooder temp. My older chicks are supposed to be down to 70 degrees now, but when my house is 85 degrees, that's impossible! 85 is fine for the little ones still, but i keep watching and making adjustments to make sure the temp didn't go higher in their brooder.
It's so sad to lose a chick. <hugs>

Wendy, The D"Uccle hen I got from you is doing great!. I bet you can't guess what I named her. Yes, you guest it Millie. I have a beautiful Blue Cochin Bantam Cockerel the same age as the Frizzles you got from me. He's being a But Head to some of the other chicks. I should have brought him to the swap and kept the Frizzle Roo. How long will it take for him to get used to new chicks hi age that I introduced to the flock?
