April Hatch-Along!!!!!!! Whos with me?????

Well, I have entered lockdown. 6 of 6 made it this far. 5 little ones are in the air cells and I hear peeping. The one with a small air cell I am doubtful it will make it. It doesn't seem as far developed as the rest. Lots of space and fluid at the small end, little air cell. Fingers crossed for it, I wanted to see what a cayuga/rouen cross would look like. Now the hard part... Waiting.

I've got my first ever Pekin hatching as I type!!!! He's the only one that's hatched so far but today is only day 27 for my clutch. I'm not giving up hope that I'll at least have a couple of more to break through tonight. This is soooo cool! :D

I've set up a temporary brooder in my office as I'm afraid of putting them straight in the drafty (huge) brooder I've built just yet. I want to make sure they are plenty warm and cozy and doing good for the first couple of days.

Will keep you updated and pics soon. :)

My Pekin hatched last night but he's not walking yet. One of his legs is turned in toward the other. But his other leg is doing good and hes able to move the other. With some advice, I think I will leave him alone and see what happens and hopefully it will striaghten out. Does this happen a lot?

Look who's here

I'd have to see a picture, but I've seen quite a few pekins with leg issues from hatching. If he/she can get around okay and you manage his/her feed properly to control weight, a pekin with a less than perfect leg can live a long, happy life.

I've got cayugas and a couple khaki campbell eggs in the hatcher now.

I've got incubators full up. So full that I had to use my smaller hatcher as incy #3. I'd tell peeps to stop giving me eggs but... well... just not going to happen!

He still is not standing, but with help from me, he's able to sit and eat and drink water. Im really considering making a splint to correct the leg.

The drake I have injured his leg, the hock was broken, and my vet used a splint, and after about 8 weeks he was healed just fine. So I know it's possible to correct their leg problems. I'm not going to give up on my little guy!

I would give him another day to see if he can adjust to walking on it the way it is. Sometimes splinting can make things worse. I had a duckling that had a leg worse than your duckling's and I tried to fix it and it got progressively worse and I had to put her down. Not sure if it was my fault or not.

Have you tried giving him/her a little swim in a sink? Sometimes a little swim therapy helps the duckling figure out what they can/can't do with a questionable leg.

Well folks I have a update!!! Today's day 24 for my pekin duck eggs. Candled to see what's goin on inside...and I have like 6 that have already internally pipped gahh! Two look like they are pipping on the wrong end. So I guess that today is lockdown :) wish me luck will post pictures!
