I agree completely on finding fully developed chicks. My first, and only hatch, earlier this month I had several that were fully developed with most to all of the yolk absorbed. I've since learned through here and talking with some breeders not on this form but near me, that it was likely my altitude (6,000ft) and that they needed more oxygen. That, or my temp ran a bit high in the incubator which is also a likely culprit. Anyhow, I was told by some fellow high altitude hatchers to try putting hydrogen peroxide in the water wells toward the end of incubation, or at least for lockdown. Conveniently, it also helps with bacteria! It is so discouraging to find a fully developed chick. I had that happen with the Cayuga ducks I hatched....one pipped and couldn't zip because of the membrane...I didn't notice the pip until it was too late. In his case, he pipped on the bottom of the egg so I never noticed it had pipped until I went to remove the eggs. Since I had to assist all four of the others I know how tough that membrane was. I'm not sure knowing I could have saved him too was a good thought.![]()
On the other hand so far...every last chick I have had to assist has died....the Cayugas I saved though are happy little ducklings running around pooping, eating and sleeping. LOL Who knows....
Are their eggs similar in color to MJs sage green?
Guess everyone here has seen that BYC will be moving platforms soon? And will be in read-only mode for a time while the move is happening. I have a thread on BYH called WVduckchick's Pond (or something to that effect) if anyone from here wants to pop in and say hey, please do. I probably won't be around a whole lot this week anyway, but will check in at the Pond.
Oh, my hatch from Friday/Saturday was not stellar, but got 4 adorable chicks. A calico bantam cochin, a blue copper Marans, a black copper, and a teeny tiny serama.
Now the 3 leftover eggs from my last broody are in the hatcher, 2 bantam cochins and a chocolate Orpington. The orp and one cochin have pipped, the cochin on the wrong end.
That is CRAZY staggered hatching!! But I'm just as badI I can't remember, are you hatching all chickens, or do you have some ducks in there?Hi all. I'm down to 75 eggs in the incubator. Lockdowns begin on Friday. I'll fire up the LG on Wednesday to get it regulated for the staggered hatch. I expect 22 in the first lockdown, 26 in the second lockdown, 15-19 in the third lockdown, and 4? in the last lockdown. 32 of these are shipped eggs and 43 are from my flock. I'm exhausted just thinking about the 10 days of hatching... I honestly look forward to turning off the incubator for a little while. I'm trying to encourage one of my hens to go broody. She needs to take over this chick hatching and raising stuff. She hatched 15/15 last year.![]()
I couldn't find the option for renaming this board. It's probably too late.
