April Hatch Along

Hmmm, snakes... you got me there!!
But what I really want to say is, Guess who is running around the brooder????!!!
Oh wv - thank you so much for the help! We "drenched" her and in about an hour she was acting normal!! Now, I know better than to celebrate too soon, but she literally could not stay upright an hour ago, and now she's pecking stuff off her brother's face!! Okay, mini celebration - but that's all. :celebrate

Ok, just a mini celebration!

:celebrate

:weee

But seriously, Nutridrench is much more concentrated vitamins, and gets into the bloodstream almost immediately, whereas the other stuff takes a while, and is much less potent. The other stuff is fine and dandy for regular use, but in dire straights, I think ND is the ticket.

Messy, stinky stuff, but hey, who cares? :D

Slipped tendon is the worst, if ya ask me :(
I had one that was slight, and one that was pretty bad. Nutridrench fixed them both up, along with a little neck stroking, and babying. I've read that alot never recover though.

I didn't know snakes did it. What does it entail in snakes?

It's fairly similar in snakes. Lots of weird shaking and craning the head upwards.

Pretty sure we got a lot of it down her, but we didn't measure it. Hopefully she doesn't have some odd "over vitamined" affliction next!! Her brother was cleaning the extra vitamin off her down once we put her back, so maybe we just dosed him a bit too?! I also put just a smidge in their water, and we are watching this little pair like hawks (minus the, ""I kill your favorite chickens" mentality famous in hawk brains.)

I have figured out its a little easier to touch the dropper with your finger, get a dab of it, and wipe up the side of the chicks beak and it will lap it in. My guess is it would take quite a bit to be too much, but I guess I should look that up, since I recommend it to people quite a bit. :D

Glad they seem to be doing well now. :fl

So we candled in place this evening. Five eggs taken out. Three clears and two blood rings. All three of the Wyandotte eggs came out and two of the Barred Plymouth Rocks. That leaves all of my Sussex still in the mix. (Woot)

There were a couple I was unsure about so I left them in and will check again in 3-5 days. I've gone over candling pics a bunch of times, but still not really sure what I'm looking at.

Feeling cautiously optimistic.

6 Lav Orps hatched, bunches of pips and zips going on.

But the bad news....I was watching one zip that wasn't breaking the shell very well. It zipped completely around and then stopped. I thought I saw movement, so I waited.... I waited too long. It died. Fully zipped!!!

But after I pulled it out, trying to revive it, I noticed it didn't have much of an egg tooth. Everything else looked fine, had a little belly left to absorb, but nothing major.

Guess that's the breaks.

Congrats on the new babies!

Sorry you lost one

She hatched!!! She has some unabsorbed yolk sack, it looks like. I hope she makes it.

YAY!!! She made it out

Well my 10th chick that had zipped didn't make it. I really wanted to assist, but kept telling myself to wait 24 hours because that's what I've read several places. Now I can't stop thinking that I could have saved it.

But I'm grateful to have 9 beautiful blrw chicks from shipped eggs. 2 eggs have not hatched and we're on Day 22, so not much hope for them. I can't see much when I candled. But wow, seeing the difference between feed store chicks and private breeder chicks really makes you appreciate the work that goes into improving the breed lines, instead of breeding for quantity. I think I've actually been cured of my addiction to buying those feed store chicks now lol. The blwr I bought from Kahoots last month look like a whole different breed, with gold/copper where red should be and more gray than blue.
Awww...sorry your baby didn't make it out
hugs.gif
Many times if they are not strong enough to make it out, then they have a hard time out of the shell if you assist...at least that has been my experience
hmm.png
So hard to know what to do! And yes...breeder chicks are so different from feed store chicks

7 Lavender Orpingtons in the brooder so far, and my little black/split beauty!

What day are you on with your eggs?

I just checked on her, she was helping the farm store chick to preen her brand new wing feathers! Yes, it has indeed been yet another up and down day. I think I prefer plain old boring days from now on!!
I know what to look for now - she was behaving a little oddly right after she hatched - keeping her eyes closed a lot more than normal. I can hopefully preempt this type of thing if it happens again!
