April Hatch Along

Pics
I also did my 2nd candling on the CL's and the Polish, Pulled 2 Polish, 1 quitter and 1 clear, and 11 of the CL's, 3 blood rings and 8 clears. I swear, that lady must not bother to check her fertility! This is the 2nd clutch I've gotten from her, and the 1st only had 3 with any development at all, out of 18 eggs!! Now she's selling on ebay as well!

There are some pretty unscrupulous sellers out there. I have had to learn the hard way a number of times. Sometimes they really work with you to make things right (I have set some of my own eggs after having amazing fertility, to find that 2/3 of them were infertile - so I know it can happen honestly), and sometimes, like one seller I worked with, they say, "They were all fertile and you must just not know what you're doing." Hmmm. Great. Thanks so much.

My Sage Eggers hatched on the 6th! Being CL over Welsummer, I THINK I have 6 pullets and a cockerel. What do you think?

The possible boy is in the front in this pic.

I like that mix! I think that it's very possible you're right. What luck! They are super cute. Those should be some beautiful eggs.

Good Morning! I am hoping to get some opinions on my aircells! My eggs are starting day 5 and I checked a couple. Last year my aircells grew big FAST when I was running at 25-30% humidity. It was my first attempt hatching since I moved to a higher altitude...6500ft. So this year I am trying higher humidity to slow it down....50-55% and this is what they looked like this morning

Thoughts for starting day 5?

Wow, adorable chicks! And sorry about the dismal set. I think some sellers just don't care. As someone said, they can just use the excuse that you screwed it up. So any time I set shipped eggs or even from someone else, I set some of my own for comparison purposes. Then if mine died too, I'd know it was me and not the eggs. (have never had that happen though lol)

As I mentioned on the other thread, I think they look plenty big for day 5! How old were they at set?? That makes a difference if they were older, therefore bigger, to start with.

It's a vitamin deficiency - E and Thiamine (which is one of the B vites) and some think selenium possibly? There were a lot of varying opinions on the topic when I researched. Some think it's hereditary, or that it comes from a deficiency in the hen who produced the egg, or that certain medicated feeds block vitamin absorption... leave it to the web to really be confusing and all over the place as far as causes go... but, they all agree it's vitamin related, so a straight dose of vitamins is the antidote. (Oh, there is also a general consensus that shipped chicks suffer from it more often because of the stress (and lack of good nutrients during shipping.)
I have always used vitamins in my waterers for my new chicks, but sometimes the severity of the deficiency calls for a more direct approach. And as wvduckchick said, severe cases often do not recover - and I was so grateful to have her depth of experience here, at my fingertips when it all happened.
This chick exhibited the early signs right from the get-go, only, I had never encountered it, so I just thought she was an extra sleepy chick. I wonder if all the trauma the eggs in that shipment went through played a part? It truly was miraculous that she and her brother hatched at all... so perhaps. (I don't feel particularly inclined to do a study on the topic.)
Hope that muddies the water for you a bit more.

Very muddy subject, but I agree, it definitely has to do with vitamins, one way or the other.

And I'm just glad I signed on at the right time, and it worked for you. And for your hubby for running right out to get some ND. That was awesome!

I believe not more than a day or 2 old! They are local eggs and I picked them up on Monday early afternoon. This egg has the biggest aircell..the others are smaller.

Thank you everyone on here for your help along the way. Even though I don't comment much, I read everything and I've learned so much from you all. I have another lockdown coming tomorrow with bieles, more blrw, CCLs, bresses and blue ameraucanas. I'm a little more nervous about this next batch because shipping took 4 days..

Awe, they are super cute. And you're a hatching manic! LOL I'm jealous of your blrw. Enjoy them! Hopefully the next hatch will be just fine too.

Oh wow. I can't add a whole lot since I'm on my first hatch, but I also live at 6,000 ft. I candled last night at day 7-8 and that's about what my air cells looked like. My eggs were 1-2 days old and my humidity has averaged around 30%.

We have no humidity up here right now, very cold and dry

I am going to have to really watch them carefully and run my humidity at the higher end! My eggs are not from up on the mountain so not sure how that factors in!
