April Hatch Along

I finally got the new Brinsea tubing from Stromberg's (for the humidity pump). The site when I ordered it, did not explain that they the price listed was PER FOOT. I thought I was ordering a roll of tubing. No, it was per foot. Thankfully I ordered "quantity" 2. This tiny little strip of tubing was ridiculous! If they sell it by foot, they shorted me 1/4 foot. The piece I got was 1 3/4 feet. It wasn't even 2 feet long!!! Since my kitten LOVES to eat this tubing - AND Brinsea says to replace it every 3 months - I need to order a LOT of it. So, disappointed in what they shipped, I went back online to try to order more - Brinsea says it's "out of stock" AGAIN - first time - their "out of stock" message sent me to Strombergs in the first place. The 2 months it took for them to send me the tiny strip of tubing guarantees I won't order from them again. But, if I WAS willing to buy it from them, they don't have it listed anymore either.

Until I can find a better method of keeping the kitten away from the humidity pumps, we've been using egg cartons to cover them. We stacked them, so when the kitten approached, the stack of egg cartons collapsed and scared him. I haven't seen him go near the area since.

Anyway, we were able to use the 1 3/4 feet of tubing to set up one of the incubators for LOCK DOWN. Tonight I'm locking down the Bielfelders that I'm hatching for Gotro17 - I'm hoping there are at least 3 that developed, The bulk of them were infertile AGAIN. I'm also locking down the Golden Laced Sebrights and the Seramas I'm hatching from TJChickens, I pulled 4 Seramas at the 10 day candle. I didn't pull any of the Sebrights.

Just a thought for your tubing..if it's silicone can you use fuel line? My husband does small engine repair and I have ordered it from Amazon and purchased it from family center. It is clean of course, you can pick your size and footage. Good luck with your hatch. BTW.. cheaper too.

Thanks, I'll look around locally - to see if I can find something similar.

But there are a couple of forums on here talking about using a different tubing - This stuff is SO soft and bendable, and the tubing wraps around a "nipple" on the tank, and that nipple spins, to pump the water. They say a stiffer tubing could damage the motor.

I have 2 resevoirs - and Brinsea sells replacement motors....so if I can find a similar tubing, I'll give it a try.

Have you considered the spiral cut pvc/plastic tubing they use to protect trees from deer and mowers, and wires/cables from cats, puppies and rabbits?
Example 1
Example 2
Example 3
Search spiral wrap hose (or electric cord) protector

The tubing I suggested is pretty pliant.. you wouldn't believe the way it needs to bend sometimes in small spaces. Had another thought too. What about aquarium air line? Or oxygen line? Suppose medical supply for that.

Another thought is the tubing that goes with medical air pumps, can't think of the terminology, but folks on oxygen...ya know.... the kind they stick in your nose when in the hospital :p

I'm having a terrible time with these Cayuga eggs. Did a partial assist on the first one this morning....he is in the brooder with the Anconas now. Watched the second one all day as the membrane got more and more brown. :( did an assist an hour ago and had to chip that little baby out slowly. Laid him in the brooder with his butt still in shell....he finally kicked loose and now he has just laid there for an hour. He has a bit of swollen belly and a bloody spot on his navel. :( but he is breathing. The other two Cayuga eggs that have pipped are doing the same exact identical thing. Pip and I can see the membrane turning brown. This is not happening to the Anconas in the incubator with them. It is bizarre. Is there anyway to get these membranes more moist without doing painstaking assists on both? Humidity is reading 82%. The membrane on the Cayugas is VERY tough. Help....anybody? Gosh my Welshies....and these Anconas to a lesser degree....pip...take their sweet time to zip and then there they are...they pop out.

How long are they going after pip before they start looking brown? I use Vaseline, others like coconut oil, or even Neosporin.
