April Hatch Thread--Come Join Us!

My two orphaned eggs have hatched! Here are some pics. Annie is less than 12 hours old and Oliver is about 1 day old. Annie

Oliver

Aww! They're so cute! (At the risk of sounding melodramatic, after watching the news and seeing the horrific pictures of the explosions in Boston, it's beautiful to see that something as cute and innocent as a baby chick still exists in this world!)

And the final count is 6 chicks out of the 9 eggs that made it to lock down. Not too shabby for my first hatch attempt ever! (And with shipped eggs no less.) We ended up with: 2 Marans (cuckoo I believe) 1 Barred Rock 1 EE 2 Black Austrolorps The second set of eggs is in my home made incubator that was intended to a hatcher but it holds temps so much better than my Farm innovations forced air(which I am returning thanks to Amazon's generous return policies). I am hopeful I get at least a few more chicks out of this next batch. Unfortunately they were beaten and shook by the post office and it appears the hens who laid the eggs were quite young. I went back to the listing I bought them from and I had missed the fact the hens and rooster were only 4 months old....So we shall see. They were inexpensive but, also the breed I want the most

I have 3 of the farm innovators forced air incubators and I love them, but only with the use of the Spot Check thermometer from Brinsea. If you use that it works wonders. Here is a link to the thermometer: http://www.brinsea.com/prod-Spot_Check_Digital_Incubator_Thermometer-25.aspx

On my first day in the incubator accordung to 1 thermometer I had a 112 degree spike, my electronic thermometer showed 108-it is the more accurate one. What are my chances of having a hatch?

Too cute! And I am jealous you have spring!

That is right. I had a few friends running, and was blessed to hear they finished about 20 minutes before that happened. Prayers going up for those families.

I set my next hatch last night at midnight. 13 shipped eggs along side 4 of my own mixed up farm eggs.

I am running an experiment of sorts. The shipped eggs came extremely dirty. I cannot remember if I posted a picture here, but They were bad. I did some research and though most people said not to wash them, I found some sites where people were successful hatching after washing with different things. Since I am sort of a nerd like that I decided to keep the cleanest unwashed and washed 8. (3 were washed in water. 2 in ACV and 3 in peroxide.) I figure they stand a better chance with most of the poo washed off than they did with all of it caked on there.

I added some of my own eggs so we have at least something hatch. ;)

I will keep you updated. We should have a hatch date of May5.

Well I candled the egg that I found a crack in. There is deffinately a chick inside it and it appears to be alive - the air sack is intact but the whole shell of the entire egg is fractured. It has hairlined fractures all over it and a dent in one end. I am thinking - just leave it be and hope? Because if I fiddle too much the thing is just going to shatter. It must have gotten damaged wiht the other two eggs in the post. However if the chick has grown this far with a damaged shell it may be ok? I think others have managed to hatch from broken eggs. I know they have done experiments and taken chunks out of shells to "watch chicks grow" - ????? What to do???? I guess just very carfully turn and hope - as the chick grows it will surely put more pressure on this shell? If it was just one place we could have tried to patch it but the entire shell is a jigsaw puzzle of hairlines fractures. At least we can see the chick inside - day 12 so there is 6 days to lockdown. It is encouraging that the other eggs seem fine and are getting heavey to turn. One of those shells is covered with goo from the brocken egg though - I am hoping all these things wont bother them as a chicken nest is not exactly bacteria free and they grow inside eggs fine under a hen!
well I can't toss the egg now I can see a chick in it can I? I do hope the shell holds out? On the plus side for the chick hatching out isn;t going to be hard work!

Oes -

If the chick is still moving and alive maybe separate it from the otheres in case it falls victim to a bacterial infection? That way it gets a chance without putting the others into so much risk? I'm not sure.

I would have to let it have it's chance. Wondering if/how a thin layer of parifin wax would do. Get it just warm enough to melt/stick and dip portions of the egg??
Or maybe paint it on?
NO expert here just thinking out loud.
