x2. I should do that sometime. Hehe.

HI,
Suffering from disappointment this morning.
I have wanted Buff Orpingtons forever and gone to great length to find them
I purchased from a BYC breeder with a great reputation and paid a fair price for my eggs.
She packed perfectly and sent four extras.
Candled at day 11 and only have 5 developing.the rest clear................grrrrrrrrrrrr
Is there anything beside not being fertile that anyone can think of that would cause clear eggs????????????
It does not make sence to me that she would have a fertilization problem.
I may write her.but do not want to offend her.
Thanks in advance for your ideas............

Shipping eggs can greatly reduce the development/hatch rate. I wouldn't be quick to blame the woman you got the eggs from. How many eggs did you start with? Where were they shipped from and to? Temperature and rough handling during shipping play a big part.
I am also incubating shipped eggs right now.. Only 4 out of 10 are developing as they should. The way I see it, I took a chance buying eggs that had to be shipped.

Serenity Lane,
THank you for responding.
The last thing I am thinking is anything bad about the breeder.or putting blame anywhere.
Thought I made that clear but it is hard sometimes to put things in the correct words to make a point writing.
Just trying to figure out what the problem is.......
I never expect greatness from shipped eggs

Just had my hopes up fpr a better percentage.
And, if her Roo took vacation without notice, thought she may want to know.I would.
Thanks again

I didn't mean to come off harsh.. I tend to do that sometimes in type, its just not the same as having a real face to face comversation. Sorry

I didn't even think of the roo taking a vacation.. I suppose that is a possibility.

How many eggs did you start with?

I dont think my humidity gage is right! and I tested it in the brinsea just now and it said 26% humidity and the brinsea is at 45%......so wrong, wrong, wrong!
because of the low humidity I had put tinfoil under the screen to cover the holes and can put 1/8 inch of water across the entire bottom and the chicks will be about 1 inch above that on screen floor ... I figured that would bring the humidity up, as I have to vent it about an inch on both sides to keep the temp under 104 but now am worried about too much humidity...

should I be concerned? I can try to find another humidity gage at tractor supply tomorrow before lock down... if you know of a accurate one!

Anna-I'm sorry I didn't mean to leave you hanging! I was doing my girl scout troop meeting, soooo let's see yes always have at least 2-3 hydro/temp meters at one time. They don't sell hydro meters at tsc, go to walmart and they are over in the paint section, where they keep the big outdoor themometers. Any of them should be fine, I got the one that cost 9 something....you need to have your humidity around 70-80% in lockdown, during lockdown add hot water to the sponges thru the vent holes.

If you are using a lg still air bator use the vent plugs to keep the humidity and temp right, I found it very hard to tell when the water was low so that's why I kept the sponges in there to add the water too. To help the chicks to dry a little faster put down shelf lining, paper towels (several) on the floor of the bator/wire, that way the chicks have a better walking grip and the eggs won't role around to much while the chicks are waiting to go to the brooder. The chicks can survive 3 days without food/water so don't worry about getting the hatched chicks out to quickly.

Try plugging the vent holes on your lg bator(if that is what you are going to use for the hatcher) if yours is not a lg just use the vent/air hole plugs to see if that gets the humidity up at all...but also watch your temp, don't let it get above 100 degrees. If plugging the vent holes don't get ur #s up try wrapping your bator in towels...don't put it in a drafty area or in direct sunlight. If you use more than one hydro/temp meter make sure they run no more than 3 degrees off of each other.

You're doing great, keep tweeking the glitches, this is where you have to be creative at times. Check your hatcher for temp and humidity about every hour till it hold steady for several hours. Move it around the room, try different rooms, try closing off the room where it is, maybe open the curtain, door to see if that gets ur #s right. I wouldn't set your eggs in lockdown in anything till your #s hold for several hours/half a day. You want it to be just right before you set your eggs in lockdown, once you get it just right try and not touch it or fuss over it so it doesn't go wacky on you.

I'm here and so are others....you will be ok, it will work, breathe and keeping asking questions! Remember I'm here...
