April Hatch Thread--Come Join Us!

Wow I wish our local high school would do something cool like that. It is a pretty rural school. With all us country folk it would only make sense. :)

It's an agricultural school and they raise chickens, pigs, goats, rabbits, sheep and cattle. They recently got a horse as well, but it's for the special needs kids as a therapy horse. They also do all the gardening there. It's pretty neat, but I'm only getting the hatching eggs because my bf works there, though I guess they do sale the eggs. I only wanted them cause I don't have a leghorn...oh and because this chicken/chicks/hatching, is addictive!! Lol

I set 12 blrws & 9 olandsk dwarf eggs today. Both were shipped & have air cell issues. I am incubating them in egg cartons & I may try not turning them for a week. I haven't done very well not turning shipped eggs for 3 days in the past so might as well try something new. Good luck everybody!

Beautiful chicken choices. I'm a newbie to all this, but I'm letting everything sit for 7 days before I turn the turner on. Quite a few of the eggs I got from further away have trashed air cells, so I figure I've got nothing to lose. Lots of bubbles and the like in them. Good luck!

I just just candled a few of my eggs. I candled the lighter color ones being it is only day 3. Most of them i could see something going on! I so hope this hatch does as good as my first!

Congrats!

Welcome to all the newcomers. It's hard to keep up with all these posts. lol

I did a little candling last night and saw a few I think might be clear or early quitters but I'm leaving them in for a while longer as long as they aren't stinking or seeping or any of that, just to be sure. Had a few that had some definite veins. Gah, I just had to pick breeds that have shells that are tough to candle through. I'm glad I got the 1k lumen flashlight or I'd be sunk. Seriously considering getting an egg buddy to check heartbeats to do away with this nonsense altogether.

Weighed a sample of six eggs to see how I'm doing for weight loss, and all are within the acceptable parameters. Starting a week before I put eggs in, I tinkered around with figuring out how much water got me how much humidity for how long. Thirty ml of distilled water gets me to 33% tops before I go to bed, and down to 12% the next afternoon. Rinse and repeat.

You could put a sponge or a small bowl of h2o in the incubator if your having humidity issue. I always turn on a humidifier in the same room, my mud/laundry room. Then at lock I add warm wet shammys or sponges.

No humidity issues here. The incubator is kept in my reptile room, with a stable ambient temp of 80 degrees and humidity of 50%. I'm doing dry incubation on purpose.

Thanks for the tip though.

"MadamContrary - I love your name! Guaranteed the the egg hatching WILL mess with your plans! It just is the way it goes. LOL!"

Why thank you, I can't wait to explain to my bestie that chickens took precedence over her wedding....

Hello all, ill join this hatch along if nobody cares? i got eggs due the 8th, 9th, 12th, 15th. plus i got to let my ones now finish hatching out and ill put more in there place. i got 5 new babys as of now that hatched out the 24th of this month

I just went to purchase some true French Cooper Marans chicks and while there the guy brought me to see the chickens and show me the egg color. So he went in the coop and brought me an egg and told me to keep it! I asked if it would be fertile and he said oh yes! I got excited and said, oh ill put it in my incubator! He said in that case, let me get you another!! Yippie!! Have them going in the bator this evening :-D. Btw his rooster was GORGEOUS with the longest spurs I have ever seen!! He's in with 4 hens and you would never know they have a rooster w them, cause of how pretty they were. I'm quite excited...even though I bought 5 of the chicks lol

Well an unexpected cold front messed with my careful preparations and threw off humidity and temperature! I live in South TX so I should be able to do a dry hatch (we normally have 90% humidity so I thought I would be battling moisture not needing to increase it). Temps in the incubator went down to 97 overnight one night and then spiked to 102 the next two nights.Seriously wishing I could sit on the eggs myself. I am only on day 4 now and I am a nervous wreck!!! I want to candle but I am trying to wait until day 7 because I am a newbie and want to keep my interactions minimal, to cause less potential harm. I decided against turning the first 2 days and did one turn before bed on day 2. I have been doing 3x a day now but so many people say upright and tilting is the way to go on shipped eggs.... I may just order some day old hatch-lings to keep me busy while waiting for these babies and before I go nuts!

well i sure appriciate the welcome, and ya i think i got bit by that bug lol, as soon as i can post pics ill show you all my flock and eggs and incubator and chicks
