I have some eggs due around the 10th. We set 24 barnyard mix eggs and 11 store bought fertile brown eggs. One of those I culled because it was leaking. I quickly held a light over them all last night and saw lots of veining! It looked like some blood rings, too. Tonight is day 7 so I will candle "for real". At that point should I cull the blood rings and clears?
You may get lots of different advise.we kind find our own style after a bit.
I do not candle until day 11.....for me, 7 is a little early for throw aways..........

and I do not dump anything but clears.usually on day 18 unless it smells.
I've had to many weird things happen.
I do lock down until day25.One time was slow dumping the eggs that did not hatch
and when I went to throw them in the garbage,,,(day 27) there was a chick staring at me...........

Named her # 27......

I have had a rotton eggs only one time............. good Luck to you....................

So, candled for Day 7 and I am amazed how many of them are developing. I only had five out of 34 that were question marks, and they were all very dark shells. Every other one showed veining, and in a few there was even a baby moving a bit. Sadly, one of these was put in upside-down.

The aircell was at the end pointing down. Did I doom this baby to pipping and not being able to get air? I'm so sad. What, if anything, can or should be done? I asked on the NorCal thread and am hoping to get some good answers. I wasn't sure which way I should put it back in.

Another egg is developing but has a small hole in it. I left it in for now. I may try putting wax over the hole.
Posted this in my "my first hatch" thread but wanted to update here, too. All 10 store bought eggs that I set are currently veining! I'm so surprised.

New to the site :) mine are due on the 15th. Unfortunately already had to take out one which i thought wasn't fertilised after candling on day 3 after further inspection i realised it had a small teeny tiny crack from postage that u could only see with the flash light havent gotten my bigger bator yet so need 100% hatch rate this time.

I did give them a couple hours to warm up to room temp before I put them in the incubator.  It just seemed right to me.
Hopefully I gave them long enough.
I did Turn them last night. Now your making me think about that.
My first inclination was that they needed to "settle" after the shipping, so I might let it go today.

I sure hope I get some babies!

I only found out you had to let them settle after i put them in, its my first time with posted eggs and after finding the dud with the small crack i was so worried but the other two have veins and look fine also they were getting turn automatically by the machine every three hours. Is there a chance that they still might not make it because of not settling? Sorry for all the posts just worried :) also how do you put up proper smiley face images lol im using an i-pad.

On my first couple of hatches with shipped eggs, they went straight from the mailman's hands into the bator! lol. I didn't know any better, but both of those hatches turned out pretty well. If you're getting veins, I wouldn't worry. Shipped eggs are always a gamble, but it sounds like they're doing fine.

Ha same thing here literally opened the package and popped them in hopefully they will be alrite if my post timing seems weird sometimes its because im all the way in ireland. :)

Ain't that the truth! The money-saving is NOT worth the additional stress. This is supposed to be FUN! I am definitely keeping an eye out for something with more bells and whistles. I've been rotating mine also around to varying placements. Keeping my fingers crossed for sure. I had a delayed shipment of a dozen Polish, so will have to interrupt the whole process to put those in tomorrow. Which means once again the heat will go whacky on me. Grrrr.

The R-com 20 pro i think is the way to go im saving up as i speak you can control temp humidity and the degree of egg rotation! All digital so takes a while to learn how to use it but i love the thing no stress. But they are super duper expensive :-(

Wishing you well with your Roo...................

About two years ago I watched helplessly as a coyote took off with my beautiful English Orp...........
Thought I was going to die feeling so helpless and the Roo was screaming for help.
About two months later I went to the barn to close up for the night....and there he was.
Standing in front of his coop...........Have not a clue where he had been that whole time......'
but was really glad to see him.....

Started my first incubation last night.

I put in 12 eggs from my EE's, a few each from an Ancona mix, a Cochin mix, a Production Red type, and what I think are 2 Wyandotte mix hens. 42 eggs in all. My roster is a nice looking guy who I think is half Buff Orp. All of my chickens are mixes that I got from a small local farm so I'll end up with a bunch of barnyard mix chicks. Their ETA is the evening of Friday, April 19th.

I'm using a Hova Bator 1588. It seems to be holding the temp between 99.6 and 100.1F, and the humidity is staying 50-54%. So everything is looking good so far. I really hope that I have a decent hatch rate.

I haven't decided when to candle but I think I'll wait a week.

Anyone else use a Hova Bator 1588? How often have you had to refill the water? Any other advice about these machines?

I'm thinking that I'll have more questions as I go through this process so thanks in advance, haha.
