April Hatch Thread--Come Join Us!

Being a first timer, I'm hopeful but nervous.. I'm worried I don't know something I should. Well, I'm sure there's a LOT that I don't know but I'm hoping to learn as much as possible and have some of my eggs hatch. So far, to me, it looks like at least half are developing. What worries me are the "maybe" eggs. When should they be given up on? None of the eggs smell but some don't show much either. If anyone wouldn't mind, I started a thread and posted my candling pictures tonight. The pictures came out ok but the veins are much more obvious in person. I'd love for more experienced people to check them out and let me know their opinions.

I have never done it before and you will get different responses from different people but I know one very successful hatcher who doesn't pull the Maybes until/unless they start to smell. Good luck figuring it out.

Haven't posted much, but have been reading!

My eggs went into lockdown last night, so I'm hoping for a Sunday/Monday hatch :) So EGGcited, since it's my first hatch!

Best of luck...Go Chickies Go!!!

Well so far I am 13 for 13 on my own EE eggs! YAY!

I am 13 for 16 on shipped BLRW! 2 clears and 1 blood ring. Awesome!

I am 2 for 4 on my own pekin eggs.

Not quite sure, guessing they were infertile, no veining whatsoever. Maybe my hens are to fat. Maybe my drake is to fat. My pekins are rather plump.

Need to candle the broodies longtail eggs but not sure I am wanting that fight tonight. I know I have candled the ones that I put in the incubator that had detached air cell from these shipped ones and only one is definitely developing, the other I am iffy on what it is doing so I left it for now.
Started with 14 and down to 11. The others were definitely clear and one was a blood ring.

I will check my mixed layers most likely on Sunday and see where we stand on those. I dropped one on accident just trying to see if they were far enough along to candle and it broke wide open.

It had veining just starting so that is why I decided to wait a couple more days on those. I felt bad for dropping it!

My icelandics arrived today too. 9 had detached air cells and the other 7 appear OK. Going to let them sit until tomorrow night and then set them in an incubator by themselves so they are not in a turner. My SFH should arrive tomorrow, hoping they faired better than the icelandics eggs did.

I have some eggs due around the 10th. We set 24 barnyard mix eggs and 11 store bought fertile brown eggs. One of those I culled because it was leaking. I quickly held a light over them all last night and saw lots of veining! It looked like some blood rings, too. Tonight is day 7 so I will candle "for real". At that point should I cull the blood rings and clears?

After a long day of google and forum searching, I decided to install a fan in my still air. I re-purposed a fan from an old PC my Hubby brought home a while back. Spliced it to an old phone charger lined up my screws through the top, marked and then just got it done. Two minute install max! Now nearly all my thermostats match! Now to spend the rest of the night hovering and monitoring temps......I was also wondering about when to bail on seemingly clear eggs... I have one EE that is pretty porous but I see something in there just no veins really apparent, am I just seeing yolk perhaps? No seeping or smell, or even blood ring/spot. I am on day 8 now.

Holy cow you guys, I just rescued my BO roo from being coyote dinner. If any of you have any first aid advice please reply to my post here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/760653/urgent-coyote-attacked-roo-first-aid-advice-needed
Wishing you well with your Roo...................

About two years ago I watched helplessly as a coyote took off with my beautiful English Orp...........
Thought I was going to die feeling so helpless and the Roo was screaming for help.
About two months later I went to the barn to close up for the night....and there he was.
Standing in front of his coop...........Have not a clue where he had been that whole time......'
but was really glad to see him.....
