April Hatch Thread--Come Join Us!

So th temp went down last night in my house so ofcourse my stink little giant did as well... I woke up at 2:30 am to find it at 97.6! I don't know how long it was at that temp, most likely an hour or so. So I had to fool around with it and watch it for an hour and a half before I was satisfied it wouldn't spike on me

it has been at 98.6-98.9 since then and I just turned it up slightly more. will they be okay after being in these temps for a few hours? Also, I am so frustrated with the thermometer/hygrometer I got at walmart. The hygrometer part seems to work fine, but the thermometer stinks! My old little zoo med thermometer reads 99.8 while the walmart one reads 102! and then it doesn't even fluctuate well or use decimal points. It spiked back and forth from 102 to 104 last night while the other one was still at 100. I hope my littleo ne is right because that is what I have been going by.

I put 17 eggs in the incubator starting on March 18 - 22. So far I have 6 hatched and 2 quitters:( I definitely have some learning to do...I'd like to have a chicken incubate the eggs for future.

Having a broody hen bringing up chicks is the best part for me about keeping chickens. Watching her teach and call her babies is great!

Candled last night, silly me I was candling the eggs by holding the flashlight to the bottom of the egg... I read on here a post by Hakimi (sorry if I spelled wrong not enough coffee this morning!) to candle at the TOP end... guess what??? I saw veining for the first time so cool!!

My first ever set was eggs that were within the first 48 hours the rooster was here (he got busy right after arriving LOL) but then read that the eggs were already on their way down would not be fertilized... and so most of those 13 seem to be clear, one is a maybe (very dark easter egger and the one the rooster was mating with). I had gotten impatient and done another setting 3 days after this one of 13 more THESE EGGS have some chicks growing at least 6-8 of them look like they are developing!! EDD 4/21 for the first batch (not likely) and 4/23 for the developing batch. I managed to get a few pics on my phone to show the kids since they were obviously in bed when it was dark enough for me to candle.

My husband is hoping for a hatch success for me so I will be willing to return the borrowed rooster to Grace Jr...

Storms had me up most of the night worrying about losing power. I need to get a computer backup power battery and hook my incu's into that at some point.
That was some CRAZY storm. I live quite a way about 30-40 milles straight east of you! My cocker spaniel was so scared I had to let him sleep with my son last night. Freaky sounding thunder here. No loss of power though. WHEW!! Glad the power stayed on
Good luck. Praying for a couple CLB babies here myself

Here are the rest of the babies in the brooder babies.

The Orpingtons again because I didn't want to try and photograph them again

The Dark Cornish babies

I call this one "The Peanut"

The Jersey Giants

Splash JGs

This is the baby I assisted! He's still a little weaker, probably from having less blood, but he's doing great for his first day in the brooder

The Peanut next to a Jersey Giant

And next to an Orpington!

Here's the one of the Orpington's the breeder lovingly calls "Walrus Chicks"

They are all so beautiful!!!! I <3 Peanut!

My faith in incubators has been restored (My first time a few years ago none hatched

I am day 22 without even a pip.
Pretty sure my eggs are toast but hoping I am wrong............
These are the eggs I spent a lot of money for,of course.
I am running an LG still air and it has been affected by the temp changes in the house.

The little peeper who I separated got stronger and more active until she finally stood and peeped at the top of her lungs until I freed her from solitary confinement

she is in with the rest and holding her own. I've seen her eat on her own and peck and scratch, still a ways behind the others as far as development - her siblings are 'flying' from one side of the brooder to the other and playing tag etc lol she looks a little dazed and confused but is breathing well and up walking around! I am hoping she will really spark up by tomorrow. Thank you everyone for your help! All the nursing paid off

That is wonderful news!
