Arabian Horse Thread....picture heavy

arabianequine,
Thank you

I knew the Arabian blood would be very influential, plus my stallion has produced a number of foals from totally different type mares and the foals were all smaller versions of their dam, often with his lovely champagne color and always with his fantastic temperament and intelligence. His origin is Miniature Horses but he was too tall for the registry, a bit too much leg was just the right amount for my purpose. I was able to register him with the International Champagne Horse Registry and all of his champagne colored foals are too. The other foals were registered in other registries, like my gaited pony out of my Missouri Foxtrotter. She didn't get his color (she's black sabino, her dam is chestnut sabino) but she is sure gaited like mamma. My husband asked me once, "what would we get out of a Percheron mare? She wouldn't even have to stand up to be bred......then he laughed....then I laughed thinking, hey that would be cool...never tried a draft mare though.

Here is Lil Champagne Tease, aka Studley at home.

Here is my registered MFT Pony, Harmonee's Lil Perfection.

This colt got everything dam and sire had to offer, the mare is MFT, black with not a white hair on her. Studley is not a homozygous appaloosa so this colt should have been solid, lol. He also got the champagne and he also got the gait! He's being registered Walkaloosa because he may exceed the height for the MFT Pony registry. If he doesn't, he can be MFT Pony registered too.

How tall is Studley? If he is taller than 34 inches, he can be registered with the AMHR. If he is more than 38 inches, I do not think he would qualify for Shetland pony because he does not have any Shetland blood, does he?

Unless he has Rowdy in his lines, Rowdy's parentage, particuarly his grandparents WERE Shetlands.

How would I explain this delicately, was he breeding the mares naturally out in the pastures, or ramp method OR AI?

Studley is 10.2 hands, 42 inches. He can't be Shetland, there aren't any Shetlands with his champagne color or appaloosa spots. His parents, or at least his background is Miniature Horse but he's obviously too tall for the Miniature registries. He probably looks smaller next to my son in the photo who is 6'4".

As far as breeding, he's only been live cover. We have a portable breeding chute. It's got a solid floor and pipe rail for the chute, open in front and rear. We set it up with some 2 by 6 boards at the back about 18 inches high and mounded then packed dirt at the back then, for traction, I put a stall mat over the dirt pile. He would dig into the dirt and it wore out a hole so the mat gives some traction and keeps the dirt from crumbling off the pile.

Depending on the mares preference, she can be backed into the chute or lead over the mound and stepped down into the chute then backed as far back as possible and cross tied. Mares up to 15 hands are easily accessed using this way, I simply wrap the tail, tease then lead Studley up the mound when he's dropped and it takes maybe 15 seconds to have the mare bred and Studley in a stupor, lol. Poor guy nearly faints he's so pleased with himself. I do have to use care that the mare doesn't pull forward, that would mean Studley could fall in behind her. He's pretty good about not doing that but it's happened a couple of times, thankfully without incident. I have had a mare or two that would step forward no matter what but I can actually step in and set the mare up with him loose and tell him when to come breed the mare so that works too. He knows the routine so well. Most of the mares have learned to push themselves back as far as they can get for him. Before the chute, we used the creek bank to put the mare in a low spot and have him above her, mixed results, lol. Then we also used a flatbed trailer. I put a stall mat on the end of the trailer and he hopped up on the trailer by himself and would wait for me to back a mare to him. This usually took 2 people to guide her straight back and keep her straight and back against the trailer. The chute has made it possible for me to easily manage most any mare on my own.

What we will do for our horses and ponies! lol

Growing up with TBs and QHs, I recently achieved my lifelong dream of owning or rather being owned by an Arabian. Courtesy of fellow BYCer, joletabey, I now own BA Joleta Bey, a Bey-Shah Granddaughter out of Tah Zaman's Elite. Jo came to us late November and has been a pure joy and blessing. She is a former futurity champion and a Diva Extraordinare. Very intelligent sweet gal who pouts! She outfoxed two grown men trying to load her and the transport company had to go back a second time to get her. LOL
