Araucana thread anyone?

Oh i'm the same way. I would never sell a crossed bird as pure bred, or not make it clear that its a mutt. Actually come to think of it, i didnt sell any of my last project birds untill they were what i was trying for, freezer camp...

The other thing is i was actually denied birds. I wanted to breed that breed pure but also cross it for something else in small numbers. The breeder was outraged that i was going to sully his hard worked line (completely ignoring the majority that were gonna be bred for show). Basically i want to keep the rumpless habit of the araucana, increase the size and change the color/pattern. I may aim for brown eggs to be more appealing to the average farmer.

Thank you!

I did read through the entire thread ... piece meal over the course of a month ... not that I understood everything everyone was talking about, esp. the genetics component. I never thought I'd get through, but I did.

I was originally disappointed with my hatch rate UNTIL I had read several posts about being lucky to have one shipped Araucana egg hatch. Now I see how fortunate I am.

I just bought a new camera, so once I get it snapping pictures, I'll post. I'm interested to hear feed back...the good, the bad & the ugly

Thanks Sib!

I'll have to check out my website & see what's up. My pics. need to be updated. Old camera wasn't cutting it. New one is getting taken out of the box.

Yes, I REALLY just need to work on ONE project, esp. cross breeding LOL. I have too much going on ... for me anyways. I am patiently waiting for my new babies to start laying, then I can attempt to focus on just them.

Thank you Megan! I just have one blue hen and really like her so am wanting to make more. I have a tufted roo that is( by my guess) a blue breasted gold duckwing. Thinking of putting the blue hen with him. What should I expect from this? I do need some help on setting up my breeding pens as to color so will try to post some pics of my 3 roos and 8 hens on here asap. So many of you on here seem to have a handle on color genetics, I'm just amazed!

Hi Syble,

One of my projects is creating a crested, rumpless, tufted, peacombed, blue egg layer. The hard part so far is keeping the crest and of course the tufts. I am using my own birds that I have bred, so no one can complaine about me sullying (sp) their lines good name. None of their beeswax anyway. Who knows, I may quit before I get done and I may see it to completion. My choice.

Now my Araucanas, I am fairly serious about them, so I am being picky about who gets bred to what. Right now working on egg color. At some point I will really get to work on being pickier about color.

Had a load of fun at the Humboldt Winter Poultry show. Sold a book for the club and 3 color egg charts. Handed out lots of info and raffled off 3) 1/2 dzn hatching eggs. Also passed out almost all my business cards and have a few people waiting to get birds and eggs. Yippee!!!

I had the only Araucanas there. I took 3 of my birds to show people. Two Roos and 1 hen. The posed nice for the cameras.

Alright, a photo each of my boys lately. . .

This is the Splash Cuckoo for sale. He has gorgeous tufts in what I call a cloud-like formation, where they twirl amongst each other horizontally, making a sort of cloud shape.

This is my normal Splash for sale named Canis, but yes, he does have some gold coming in there. He's got perfect tufts though, when you think of the SOP for tufts.

This is my Blue Cuckoo named Cookies'n'Cream. He's got a long way to go in color though before I am satisfied, but at least he's barred, very nice in body, and does have a tuft on the other side of his face.

This is my Columbian patterned Blue-Gold Duckwing named Marango. He's quite the man! He'll be daddy to all the duckwing-based Araucanas I'll offer. He has a bunch of blue spangling on his chest, and it's increasing the older he gets. He now has blue spangling on his shoulders, too.

I'm boiling it down to just him and his duckwing girls and the blue cuckoo and his blue cuckoo girls. One thing I've certainly found is that Araucanas are a breed in which the males don't get along the best with others. They do decently amongst each other, but with other breeds of cock(erel)s, they will often fight. Nothing serious though.

So I have a question. I set 8 eggs out of my splash pen. As they come out of the pen I write splash in pencil and stick them in the carton to set later. In that pen I have a black hen, blue hen, bbr hen, and a blue splash hen. The roo is my red duckwing roo. My black hen just started laying, everyone else has been laying a while.

Of the 8 eggs set, 1 didn't develope. They all are hatched with the last one just climbing out of the shell. I have three duckwing based chicks, 1 splash chick, 2 blue, and the last one appears to be very black. Its feet are black, its beak and eyes are black, its down looks black. It has two nice tufts so I expect it to die at anytime between now and next week. My question is, Is a black out of the above combo even possible, especially since I know the black hen just started laying and I can tell which eggs are hers. They are in a chicken tractor that no other rooster can get into without a blowtorch and opposable thumbs.
