Araucana thread anyone?

Are rumplessness and tufts dominant or inherited traits? I'm picking up some eggs to hatch for a friend (still tweaking my incubator) and the eggs are from a rumpless Araucana rooster over rose combe Brown Leghorns and Cuckoo Marans. I'm looking forward to the sex linked Olive Eggers and some pale blue egg layers, but not sure what to expect from those awesome Araucana traits. I would love pictures of Araucana cross breds! Maybe we could add them to one of the EE threads? I haven't been able to find any Araucana EEs on them already.

Come join the fun!

Sounds good ... good luck with your hatch Syble ... post your progress here, plus pictures.

I'll be joining the fun shortly... just need to get the incubator cleaned and ready ...

Really? Did you search real good? I posted quite a few Araucana made Easter Eggers on there. Rumplessness does indeed pass onto the offspring, it usually pops up in 50% of the chicks. Tufts pop up in 50% of the offspring too, however a clean faced bird doesn't have them, so they won't pop up.

As another note, I even posted some Araucana made Olive Eggers in the OE thread.

You can get rumpless, tails, and the ugly partial tails with a rumpless to tailed breeding.

Tufts will occure 50% of the time in a tufted to non tufted breeding, because a tufted bird only has 1 tufted gene and 1 non tufted gene. And a non tufted bird has 2 non tufted genes. Since tufts are dominant if a bird does not have tufts it doesn't have the gene 99% of the time. There is the rare instance of internal tufts, and tufts that are so small some do not recognize them as tufts.

Howdy, Araucana peeps! Just thought I'd drop in and say hi.

I developed a pretty nice flock after about 5 years of breeding, only to have all my best birds killed by a pack of coyotes a couple months ago. It was such a devastating loss at first I thought of giving up on the breed completely -- but of course I changed my mind.

My first Araucana hatch of 2011 is due April 6th! Wish me luck!

Golly, good luck! I am soo sorry to hear of that, your Araucana flock was my biggest inspiration into getting Araucanas.

Awww thanks! No worries, I'm sure I can recover the flock in... a few... years.

Ok, how about I don't think about how long it will take... the important part is that all the right genes are still in there somewhere! I just need to get them all to combine properly!

I have blues! Hurray! I hatched 5 more nice blues yesterday- 1 bilaterally tufted. I had an order for 6 blue chicks at Stevenson and I thought, "Yeah, that's likely" but it looks like I'll have a few for me and some left over after all.
