Araucana thread anyone?

I don't think dad's beefier. His saddle is shorter and thus spreads to the side more and his wings are a little loosely carried, plus the angle of the photo is different.

If he's less than 14 months old he'll still grow but honestly I think both dad and son are equally beefy. And pretty

(but I prefer son's saddle, just me though)

I agree. It has a much nicer length and fullness to it. I prefer the over all shape of the son over dad too.

thanks, I'm still learning, and yes, hes well below 14 months... april hatch i believe? so around 8 months or so?

his hackles and saddles are free from blue/black lines, the darkness you see is his mahogany back showing through

he does usually hold his wings in a bit more then that, he had just flapped to crow before i took that photo lol.

I'm hoping to breed out the red stripe in his breast this year. looks like hes got at least 1 copy of a patterning gene(lacing), i don't see it in the hens though so that's good.

if only someone had a tuft

I am glad he holds his wings tighter. I am shooting for wing carriage like the above pictured red bird. I have a few roos that hatched this year, that hold their wings so high and tight it is really weird looking. So I went too far the opposite way. LOL! I have 1 roo chick that is a blue/red. His wings are all blue, his back is blue and his saddle and hackle are red. His wings are so tight it makes his saddle look small and thin and a bit like a skunk stripe. So weird looking.

I have been conversing with Ann Charles about birds, I have a couple of wheaten chicks from her, and I was flabergasted to realize our BBRs are supposed to be wheaten. I had to go back and read the SOP. I have yet to see a wheaten BBR hen. I have 1 pure wheaten chick (pullet), and I have a split wheaten (pullet).

This came up because I posted a couple of pics of my BBRs in another thread about color and a modern game breader commented that my BBR hens have light chests because they have wheaten in them. That got me thinking, that maybe my original BBR roo was wheaten and I have all these splits running around.

Now that I have at least 1 pure wheaten I am definately going to work on cleaning the colors up. I totally prefer the wheaten hens to the wild type anyway.
