Araucana thread anyone?

I did open her up a little to try and see what was inside. Alot of poop was inside but i did not see a huge egg....but I dont know if the huge egg would go backward up inside her body once her muscle tissue was not alive anymore and completely relaxed? I have never cleaned and dressed an animal before so I did not know what i was doing. I have seen pictures ect....but seeing it and doing it for me were two different things. It was also dark outside the porch light wasnt helping out much. If she isnt REALLY nasty in the morning and I can stomach it I may look further to see what I can see. I wanted to wait until morning so I could see everything really well but that would be another whole night for her to suffer so I decided against waiting.
I was wondering, but didn't want to ask thinking it might have sounded insensetive. She shouldn't be "gross" in the morning, but will be in rigor by then. I wouldn't think it would have gone back further after death, but don't know that for sure.

Someone on my other thread said I should have lubed my finger and stuck it up in there and found where her skin flap and the egg meet and urge the skin from around the egg and then the egg would have come out....she posted this 5 minutes ago....a little late to try it. Now it is haunting me a little. Have you ever heard of needing to do this.

I have heard about the warm water baths, and steam, and lubeing the vent w/ oil, and the Ca+ and vit D, but I had not heard about any flaps. But I still think you did the right thing, even if...... I think if you are able to do the necropsy you are going to see it was more involved then a stuck egg. One of your posts mentioned a strong and disagreeable odor, that screams infection to me.

Yes she did smell...REALLY BAD! I am pretty set on checking her further tomorrow just to learn from the situation. At least her death would not be for nothing. If I knew she was healthy I would have probably attempted to dress her but not knowing for sure I am passing on that thought. So learning from her is what I have and am pretty dead set on it. Thank You so much for all of your help it is greatly appreciated!

yikes.

It was an egg :( This would have been her first egg. It was a large+ size egg trying to come out of a bantam sized Araucana. I don't know if she could have ever passed the egg..... There was alot of fecal matter and some yellowish matter so I think she was backing up and getting septic/infection. ???? So now my question is am I doing something wrong to cause this? I have a chicken tractor with Purina layena food available 24/7 some grit and water of course (just plain water no apple cider vinegar or anything added) My birds are let out in the morning and they range all day. I have water available at various spots around the property where they range. I am aware that they do not eat much of their Layena food.....they are much more interested in ranging. Is there something I need to change or add?

I've never had an araucana bind, so I wouldn't say it was a breed thing, but as mentioned it could be a line thing, or it could just be a fluke. I have had quail bind, and have had different methods to unbind them, but it seams like once bound they are prone to it and eventually succumb. you did the right thing, don't give up on the breed, just try a different source

Sounds like your doing all the right things for your chickens, if it was something you were "doing" others besides that one line of chickens would be having trouble too.

I have rethought the idea of giving up on Araucanas. I love them so much! I thought about hatching out some of my own eggs but I am also concerned it is a line problem so I have decided against that idea. I am going to try a completely different line and see what the differences are....I would like to order some hatching eggs in the spring and see if I can get one of my Wyandottes to hatch them for me or purchase a small incubator. I would like a mix of Araucana and Wyandotte if anyone here will have eggs or chicks available please PM me.
