Araucana thread anyone?

The person coming for the hen is about 2 hours away... that's why I said "supposedly"! But, I drove 3 hours round trip to get the cockbird in my avatar. Another person who emailed me about the hen this morning is a little over an hour away. I guess when you are dealing with a rare breed its worth the drive!
Yep,

I still have my deposit with Willow Creek. She thinks the shipping prices won't affect my hopeful trio.

How early can you generally reliably sex these guys?

The batch of chicks I bought from Nancy Utterback last fall were tricky. They were 8 weeks old at the time and 2 were obvious cockerels, 2 were obvious pullets, and 2 were questionable. The questionable two were verified around 10 weeks.

The 6 week olds I have now, well, two of them started to redden up in the comb and face at 5 weeks! So it varies greatly.

Yesterday was day 7 for the 10 eggs in the bator. 4 of the 10 are growing. :yesss:
I don't plan to toss the other 6 until at least day 14, just in case they're late starters.

The breeds my roo was 'successful' with are Cream Legbar, Norwegian Jaerhon, and Naked Neck. I most desired successful mating with the Legbar, but I'm SUPER excited about the Naked Neck.

NAKED NECK, REALLY? How did my Araucana roo accomplish that? She's a BIG BIRD! :clap I wonder what THAT offspring will look like?!!!! I really love the Naked Neck breed. They're like puppies and seem to really enjoy human company.

It will look like a tiny Emu, at least in my imagination.

As I feared I was stood up on selling the hen. I went to the next person on my list and she is supposed to come Friday for her. :fl

Since I had the hen crated I let Lil' Girl and her chick back in with the flock. Its like they had never been apart. I saw Mama gently peck at the chick twice, almost as if to say "I know you're not a threat, but please note I am the highest rank on this totem pole." Manolito kind of side steps the chick like he's a little freaked out by what that little thing could be lol. Bonita just ignores him, even though she was the chick's first mother. Its good to see the family back together.
