I'm pretty sure it hatched Sunday, so we are rapidly approaching that time limit. Surely it can smell the food and water if it needs it (I hope?).

Most birds have a poor sense of smell. Isn’t Ratchet getting off the nest to poop at least once a day? You may need to dip the chick’s beak in the water to get it moving.

Every day I have been home I have seen her get off the nest once a day, however I haven't been home enough to see if she has been getting off the nest since the chick has hatched.

Luckily I am home today. Already made 3 trips outside since 7 am!

So, funny story about that chick. Sunday I was visiting the juveniles that are in a coop about 10' from Ratchet's coop. I thought I heard baby chirping, I thought, "Nah, can't be...none of those eggs were fertile." I heard it again, so I went over to Ratchet's coop and opened the door... nothing. No chick, no chirps. Same thing happened again that afternoon, and even again Monday evening. Go to the coop, open the door - no chick, no noise. I don't know how old everyone here is, but I'm in my mid-40s and my eyesight and hearing are both letting me down. I figured I was just hearing the juveniles next to her and my ears weren't picking up the proper direction it was coming from. So imagine my surprise when I finally saw that chick last night! I'm not getting senile after all!

No, she is sitting on the old, non-fertile eggs I candled a few weeks ago. The eggs I candled last week are in the incubator.

I think I'm going to pull her eggs tonight. She did have the baby up when I looked in on them and they were drinking water. I could see they had been in the food as well. She is OLD, and I think it would be best for her and the chick to move forward naturally without me holding up their progress for selfish reasons. I don't like brooding indoors, but I can do it. If for some crazy reason most of those 16 eggs hatch (I won't hold my breath), I will try to sell off the non-tufted chicks right away (minus any splash or mottled).
