Araucana thread anyone?

Nice array of birds, those first BBRs are lovely (I don't know the color well, so that's not an informed critique). I think the lavenders are coming along very nicely - I wouldn't mind having some of those running around my place.

Exactly the same experience here. We found that after adding a fan it became very important to maintain a higher humidity during hatch as the chicks dried to their shells a whole lot quicker - but it may have been that we had too much fan for that incubator.

Oh no no no no no no no no my dear - we don't say crazy around here...... we say "dedicated to the breed......"

(we leave the comments about crazy to our spouses) And this breed can use all the "dedicated" folks it can get; happy to hear there's another out there.

I'm not sure about LG, but i have the twins, hovabators. My boyfriend is going to install a computer fan into them for me to fix the hot and cold spots. hope to run a test batch then onto some shipped hatching eggs hehe

Syble,

I have an LG. I've had temperature problems with mine from the word 'go' --- too much fluctuation. My husband installed a computer fan & I had much better results. Just watch the humidity as I found it needed more attention.

I just ditched my LG & now have 2 Hova Bators & love them : )

Where do you try to keep the humidity with your hatches? I thought I had read a lower than usual number.

Chris

I've never had a humidity gauge, i guess i should get one, i just followed the instructions, and it said to fill 1 water trough and at the end fill the second i think? been a while, but i always had all but a couple hatch each time i set them. I always hand turn too.

I will admit i was one of the crazies er/um dedicated ones that read the whole thread before joining in haha.

With my first hatch, this week I had set 8 araucana eggs - 1 never developed- all 7 fertile eggs hatched which is simply amazing. I set 19 araucana x polish and 15 hatched. Again that is good.

The biggest thing for me was being able to set the eggs and walk away. I checked them every couple of days, maybe add water maybe not. I did raise humidity to 50% during hatch and it went up to 65% when a chick would hatch.

You have to remember, I built my own cabinet incubator and my hatch rate was 50% to 70% depending on the weather and the incubators mood. I had massive hot and cold spots I was always fighting. But I built it and loved it. It only cost me $60.00 except for the egg turners.

I would recommend getting the egg turners for the LGs. That way you arn't messing with temp and humidity 3 times a day.

Don't hate me because I'm beautiful:

I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I tried not to but I just COULDN'T HELP MYSELF! I'm still in the early throes of passionate love with this thing and I just had to show it off.

Whatcha got in there now?

I have no regrets ditching my LG. I definitely couldn't imagine life without an egg turner.

Lanae, I guess I overread that you made your incubator. I had discussed tossed the idea around but decided to hold off. I'd love to see the polish x chicks.

Sib, You don't find your water reserves empty? Wow. I can tell when my water reserves are going dry when my gauge tells me. I've had a woodstove running in the next room & I know that can dramatically change the humidity.

well i keep a ice cream tub of water handy(and at room temp) and turkey baster handy so when i'm in there turning the eggs its simple to top em off

I hope to have a new cabinet style incubator for hatching next spring. I intend to build it myself, the only thing i have left to work out is the turner motor. would like to make a built in brooder drawer as well. Will make a back up drawer so i can swap em out for cleaning and the like. I tend to prefer to have staggered hatches in oppose to setting a lot all at once, so that would work well for me

Georgous Megan. I have been waiting for a picture. I love it.

Syble,

I did build my original one, but right now I am using LGs with auto turners. I am saving my pennies for a Sportsman like Megans.

I'm thinking that somewhere on the Forum someone has posted detailed info on the installation of a computer fan in an LG. Right? But... I don't know how to find it. Any help out there? Thank you in advance.
