pride&joy :

Oh here comes a rant! So my Araucana frustration continues. After countless shipped eggs and no very few chicks to show I finally put together a flock 13-15 hens and kept 3 roos just to have plenty. I have been setting their eggs under broodies and put some in the bator but none have even developed. I just set 30 + in the bator if not one turns into a chick ? what should I do? I was planning on adding maybe two roos and a pullet or two later this year. I have not clipped their butts I heard some folks do this to help with fertility. I have them all in one lg pen for now. Thinking with three roos this would help, ha. There is two tailed hens (b/c of the tail) not in that pen and they have produced some nice olive egger chicks in my Marans pen. I had a half mind to say forget it and put my Amearucanas in there pen, but maybe the clipping will help? If any body does this would please post a pic or give me an idea before my birds become turnkens in reverse.

If you join the Araucana club of America, they will send you a wonderful handbook on the breed that includes very detailed and user friendly instructions for trimming.

Good for you Nadine. I sincerely appologize for not getting back to you about him. I hate it when people do it to me. I gave several people your name. I am sure he will enjoy our California weather. I wish it could have been at my place. I had been selling off a few roos to try to make room for him, but couldn't get it together.

Tufts are usually there at birth. I did have 1 roo that had no tufts at birth and at 4 months they started growing in. I was sure he was a she and cleanfaced. Boy did I get that one wrong.
