Araucana thread anyone?

ewh roosters are thought to have white underfluff, not at the base of the tail, check at the breast, however this flies in the face of the standard which says that they are supposed to have black fluff tinged with reddish bay. E+ based birds are light slate to slate underfluf I believe. So if the standard is to be believed, that would be one way of telling the wheaten apart from the wild type.

I think I will go and ask Walt.

Some pics of my new Lavender hens. Do you think one of these girls has got ear tufts? I hope not- we're not supposed to have em over here! lol

It's hard to tell from the photos, but she has tufts of feathers sticking out on both sides of her head just below her eyes- ears arent visible.

To clarify why it can be confusing with Roos the Black Breasted Red is that e+ or wild type black breasted reds, ewy or wheaten black breasted reds, and eb or brown black breasted reds all look the same as adults. The hens is where you see the difference when showing because the hens all look drastically different.

wildtype.jpg
this is e+ based or wild type

wheaten.jpg
this is ewh based or wheaten which is the APA variety for showing

brown.jpg
this is eb based or brown variety of black breasted red.

They are all duckwing based birds. The silver and golden duckwings per APA are based on Wild Type.

Notice the difference in chick down color and hen color. Now the males can all look identical depending on what modifier genes they have present, but the hens will tell what they are.

Lanae, where did you get these photos from? They are greatly helpful.

Thanks Lanae- I didnt want to have to worry about all that lethal gene business you guys have ! lol

Cheers

Wuss! just kidding. LOL!

I was sent an old link on genetics and these pics were in it. I am talking conversing with Walt about the BBR in Araucana and I am getting clarification. The standard of perfection calls for the BBR to be same as described for the Cubalaya which is a wheaten coloration, but Walt says there are no wheaten Black Breasted Reds, so my question is how do you get the coloration of the cubalaya without wheaten, because wild type gives you the look of the old english game black breasted red.

He will get back to me with clarification.

Mixed a Wheaten Maran hen with a BBR Araucana Roo. Hatched out one of their eggs and now these are the first two eggs from their chick. The eggs are an ugly brownish color. Can not wait to hatch a few out to see what kind of chick come out. I am thinking about breeding the pullet to a white roo and a BBR to see what comes out.
