Araucana thread anyone?

I am new to chickens, and by chance got eggs from Ramey from ebay. I've never had chickens, and these 5 week old Araucana chicks I have hatched have made me obsessed with the breed. I LOVE

LOVE LOVE the colors on these two chicks. I just think they are SO gorgeous, and their personalities are unbelievable, especially with my young kids. Anyway - I was hoping that someone could help me put a name to their coloring, and perhaps help me with sexing. The darker one, Broccoli, is a male I THINK. He is very calm, but the other possible roos choose him to spar with. And he has a bit (even though still small!) more comb than the other. The lighter color is Pip, who pecks at younger chicks but doesn't ever chest bump with the other suspected roos. Do you think I have my sexing right? Nobody crows yet, but the "males" voice is definitely different than the other. I want to get more to keep this coloring going, but I contacted him and he said he mixed up his experimental pens so he can't guarantee I'd get this color again. Again, I am new to this. Is this an easy color to find in Araucanas? I need MORE! THANKS!!

Female??? "Pip" She is colored like a hawk! So friendly and seeks to interact with us!

Possible male? Darker color - so gorgeous! Calm but will stick his neck up to put other suspected males in their place. "Broccoli"

His legs don't splay like that - it's just the angle.

And his eye is fine, not foggy like that, this was a super close up I did in photoshop.

My babies!

So whaddya think? Sex? color name? THANK YOU!

BYC people rock!

Girl and Boy

The girl is a golden duckwing and the boy is a black breasted red wild type.

Welcome and congratulations, you have started your roll down a very slippery slope. We will all meet at the bottom if any of us ever find it.

The top is a female silver duckwing, the bottom is a male and a columbian influenced Duckwing or BBR. He'll look much like a Production Red in color.

Ok I am putting this out there everywhere. I want to see pictures of BBR hens not roos. Large Fowl based on WHEATEN! Does anyone have any?

Here is what I have but they are way too dark and obviously have other things thrown in for bad measure.

saw auction for Show Quality Bantam Araucana eggs. I saw olive legs on black birds and some white ears which she claimed was her Show and breeding stock. I sent question to seller. Got no response which I expected since I challenged her ad. Am I correct that there should be no white ear and that legs colors are
Browns & Reds = Olive legs
Blacks = Black legs
Whites & Splashes = Yellow legs

Why are Bantam eggs so hard to find. I know people have them???
Bought the eggs for to much money based on the quality I saw but olive legs is something I need to improve on my birds since theirs are to light

Exoticduckluvr,

There are several ads on ebay that say they have show quality birds or that all their birds are show quality, when in fact the pictures they post prove them liars, but 99% of the people looking don't know the difference. Most people don't even know what an araucana is and they look at an ad that says show quality and think it must be true, because people wouldn't lie in advertising, right. LOL!

MA Mama,

In my opinion your pullet is a gold duckwing, her chest is too dark for silver and she has too much brown in her back and wings for silver. Refer to my previous post about the differences between gold and silver duckwings with pictures. The differences are subtle and have to do with shading. All of my baby roos that look like yours grow up to look like a typical black breasted red, so only time will tell.

Thanks everyone for the info! exoticduckluvr: I got some eggs on ebay recently that were an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT BREED than advertised! I questioned the seller because SOME of the eggs were waaay larger than the others, and I questioned if they were bantam. She said of course, and made me feel like a chicken-idiot, which I believed because I am new to this. SURE ENOUGH large fowl breed hatched!

At least my Araucana ebay eggs were great - that's what counts, right?!?!?!?
