Araucanas or Ameraucanas?

After four days off, I rolled over, fell out of the bed, hit my head on the headboard, stubbed my toe in the door jam, and tripped down the front steps...... all at 430am.

Well your day can only get better now!

We have purebred Ameraucanas and EE chickens. (among other breeds)

The EE are better layers and a better bird in my opinion. We got the purebreds since my daughters show 4-H and they have to be a breed reconigized by the APA. And she wanted the blue eggs for the egg class.

Cost wise, it is cheapier for the EE's also.

So if you don't plan on showing, go for the EE chickens:D

I see that you are from Michigan. Come and check out the Michigan thread!

O.K.
So Araucanas are blue egg layers that are rumpless & have a tuft of feathers on each side of their face. However, they do not really breed true & many have tails and/or no tufts. The important part is that they are NOT bearded ever.
Ameraucanas are blue egg layers that have tails, beards & no tufts. The Ameraucana society is very strict about the colors it accepts as there is such confusion about this breed. Therefore, if a purebred Ameraucana that does not fit the standard in leg or body color, is it not allowed to be called an Ameraucana.
The EE is either a purebred Ameraucana (from a breeder, not a hatchery) that does not fit the society standard OR it is a bird that's parentage includes some kind of colored egg layer (usually an Ameraucana). The EE or Easter Egger is not a purebred, does not breed true & can lay any possible egg color from white to brown to blue, green etc. etc. They have tails & often have beards & pea combs (which are closely related to the egg color gene). Straight combed birds have a very very small chance of laying blue or green eggs.
Hatcheries sell EEs as Auraucanas or Ameraucanas but their birds do not only lay blue eggs & are EEs. EEs come in every color you can think of & often look vastly different.
Hope this clears things up.

my EE doesn't look like any of the pictures I have seen on here, but her legs are green and she lays olive green eggs, so her name came naturally Olive. she isn't that prety, but very productive, I get 5 eggs a week with her, which is more than the others. when we got her, a lot of the feathers on her back were missing but they are coming in nicely now, and nearly covering her back

Pepper is another one, that I think is an EE but she doesn't have green legs, more like whitish. but she is muffed. I just call her my mutt baby. anyways, she lays brownish eggs.

Ok, since I wanted some Blue/Green eggs to livin up my egg basket, I have been on the look out for some to put in the bator. I mentioned this to my friends dad, who stated LOL, there is a guy who works at the saw mill with me, that sells them for a doller a dozen, so guess what he got me. I dont' care what they are, the eggs are pretty. One dollar, can you bet that?

I think Olive is a pretty chook. For me, it's about the contrast in the feathering and the way the feathers create the overall look. I purposely got two EE chicks that had very different looks in their down so that I could watch how it impacted their overall outcome. The one I had that started out with crisp differences in striping is coming out with feathers that have white dots on the tips so far. The other that was much darker and more blurred is producing what look like dark gray/black laced feathers. I'm really enjoying watching them change every day.

Ummmm... they are the same breed, but one is bred off the other. If you order araucaunas, you'll probably get ameraucaunas anyway, because purebred araucanas are so rare that most hatcheries don't stock them.

If you are *ordering* from a hatchery you won't get ameraucana or araucana, you will get EEs. They misrepresent their birds as those breeds but they do not meet the standard

true araucanas don't come from hatcheries, the lethal gene associated with the tufts isn't good for business....IMO
Gary-you know there are LOTS of us that would take those off your hands if we were closer
