Are Buff Orphingtons calm and quiet hens???

ALL breeds of hens will cackle after laying an egg, although some hens have a greater propensity for it. I have some BOs that don't say a thing and other and that go on and on about laying an egg.

Its not the hen that is laying that is cackling - its her friens/sister (Daisy)! She cackles when she is left alone.

The hen that is laying (Sally) doesn't cackle.

My BO is my noisiest hen. She screams and cackles like crazy when she lays, which I know is normal behaviour, but hers is so bad a neighbor called me when I was out of town to say he thought a cat had got into the coop!!

My Silver Laced Wyandotte doesn't make a peep, neither does my Red Sexlink. Go figure.

My BO, BA's, RSL's, SLW's, and EE's are all pretty quiet. It's my BR's that are always making a rukus--They're pretty though and good layers, just loud.

My two BO are the noisiest after egg laying, any other time they are quiet.
I would agree with the other poster my EE's barely make a sound

I agree with black australorps. but my over all fav for friendly and quiet are ISA browns.. or whatever your area calls the Rhode Island red / Rhode Island White mix of that.. they have always been friendly and started laying at 18.5 weeks.. smaller bird, lays big eggs.. very calm also. I also have Buff Orps and won't do them again.. they tend to be more bossy and loud in my flock. silverlaced wyandottes are quieter also.. but a little more skiddish. my loudest by far are the Bo's, BR's and WhiteRocks. good luck.. OH and on the black australorps.. I love their eyes.. dark brown and not an evil look to them.. very sweet birds all around.

Thanks guys for the responses. I really need to add one more chicken would it be OK to raise one chick on its own or would it have "personality" problems?

I'd have to say mine are about the same except....one of my BO's acts very "entitled". When she is ready to lay her egg, she wants the nest box NOW. If another hen is already in there, she will pace back and forth screaming at her to hurry up. We know the other hen has laid her egg when all goes quiet.
