We have the most adorable 9-day-old chicks chirping away in our living room. Sometimes, however, they decide to have a squawk fest. We live on a small lot and were hoping that the chickens would be fairly quiet once outside, as we're pretty sure chickens are not allowed in our development. Any thoughts? Will the neighbors complain?

I have one squawker! But mostly they are no louder than the wild birds (I live in the forest) Just curious, if this is your first flock why are they in your house? Since no others in the coop to integrate with I would put a heat plate in the coop and let them at it. You will be surprised how fast they feather out and wean themselves off the heat.

You should find out what the laws are where you are. If, or more likely when, you're caught, you need to know your rights and you don't want to suddenly be put in a position where you have to rehome asap. All you need is one neighbor to ruin everything if chickens are not allowed.

ETA: Sorry to just jump in like that without first giving you a big warm welcome to BYC! Glad you're here and asking questions!

Oh I did not see that....
OP, have you checked for sure if they are allowed or not?

Good luck

Mine are louder than I expected.
1 EE is super quiet & sweet. Barely even sings an egg song.
1 RIR has a loud egg song that goes on for a solid minute or two.

1 Barred Rock that is the whiniest, squawkiest complainer ever. From morning to night, squawk "I'm hungry"
Squawk "I want out of the run"
Squawk "Someone else is in the nestbox"
Squawk "I'm going into the nestbox"
Squawk "The sun's going down"
