Are chicks at your store yet?

I think it will be awhile. We are going to have a high temp of 4 for Wed.

I can't imagine how many 250 watt bulbs I would need to brood in my barn

My local feed store keeps them year-round almost. This time of year they have about eight breeds, with a few coming in and out every week or so. Hearing all the stories of dead birds in boxes, I can't imagine ordering animals online.

Just a warning- I purchased chicks from Orscheln's last spring and lost 4 to Marek's disease. I live in MO and the breeder they buy from does not vaccinate the ones they sell to Orcheln's. It's a hard lesson to learn. Make sure you ask before buying.

I understand the 3 or 5 chick minimum is to prevent it from being a novelty Easter gift for an unprepared chicken owner.

I think that makes sense too. You hear about it all the time. Hopefully if something like the "chick for a child" (I just made that up btw) happens, the parents have a place to home the chick that the child can visit his/her "Easter Gift".

i am in nor cal and will be going to the western feed store on greenback mentioned earlier in this thread tomorrow to get Barred Rocks and Ameruacanas, they have 2 breeds each week until mid april, Western Feed has a few stores in the Nor Cal area, they all follow the same drill its Jersey giants and wyandottes tomorrow, silkies and RIR's the week after, then they repeat.
