Are Chicks just for "Chicks"?

What--women are the collectors? I'll have to tell my boyfriend that. IMO, men are much more prolific collectors because what they collect generally costs a lot more per item! For instance, I like to craft. I can go spend twenty bucks and get a ton of supplies. He likes to collect guns and tools. We're talking BIG BUCKS. But honestly, most guys I know are HUGE collectors, but since they see the things as "functional" (tools, cars, etc), it's not necessarily a "hobby".

With respect to chickens, dear BF thought I was off my rocker to get chicks. He did help me get the brooder set up, though. Then, when the chicks arrived, it was only about 2 or 3 days later when he said to me, in 100% seriousness, "These chicks are better than TV." We would sit out by the brooder all the time and feed them treats, let them hop on our hands, etc. What a riot.

I'm a rooster and I really take care of my hens!

Men don't effuse and yak as much as women. I worked 8 years with primarily men (reforestation) then the last 23 years with primarily women (nurse) and men just don't use words as much as women. I love this site and all this talk about chickens :) and I appreciate whoever makes it happen - someone went to a lot of trouble so we could enjoy this gathering of the birdbrains.

That is SO TRUE! I used to think watching the cats play was great "free entertainment", but now, the kids and I spend our time "chicken moodle-ing (chicken watching).

i (female) frequent the board but it is my dh (male) that is the true lover of our chickens.

What an excellent thread! I've been tossing this concept around in my head for quite a while but never thought to post it.

First off, keep in mind that the previous owner of BYC was a man, and the current owner (me) is also of the same gender.

I got the chicken bug from my brother (boy... that's an interpretable comment) who was really into his chickens.

My two cents on why more females then males on this board (and there are definitely more women)

1) Women are more social
2) Men have a tendency not to admit they need help as readily
3) Many of the men that do have questions will sign up, get an answer, and get out.

That all being said, we've absolutely got a great number of excellent guys hanging out and contributing to this excellent community.

My husband doesn't care for them, but my father LOVES them (and without him, I would not have all of the pens and such that I have for them!) and my boys (7 and 9) adore them.

I know a LOT of guys that raise and like chickens, personally.

I think they may just not neccesarily all get on the boards.

Okay, okay-more guys than I thought really like chikins!

Guys keep posting. And, now I really want to know...

Do men NAME all their chikins too?

All my girls have names cept for the 12 new babies (remember-chick addiction), and my roo was named first.

Do men name their birds girly type names (suzy, lola, henrietta etc), or more generic names (pickles, A-1, roudy, etc)?

Hi

I'm Kevin and i am 15 years old and have been raising chicks for around 8 years now. I have enjoyed gathering my americanas BLUE/GREEN eggs for about 3 of those years and i swear up and down i will never get rid of them.
