Are Christmas trees chicken safe????

We chicken people are a strange lot.
I was thinking the same thing but then.....

We Keep a dieing tree treated with all sorts of chemicals,
string lights all over it, tinsil, glass globes, bits and bobs, creating a fire hazzard, evaporating all sorts of chemicals in your house for sometimes more than a month with little fresh air exchange.... but worry about the birds being exposed if they climb around in it or get sap on them...
Too Funny.

I would guess the only way it would hurt a chicken is if you force feed it the needles

I went ahead and polluted my enviornment by buying a plastic tree this year.

I've never heard of flame retardants on trees... good to know. I'm guessing they don't use them where I live since I'm way out in the boondocks and most places don't charge very much for them, its more of a side business or hobby for the tree growers. I always throw the tree out in their yard and never have had problems... except for having to get down on hands and knees to collect the eggs from under it. Its good enrichment.

mine eat it every year but our tree doesnt have sap...look heres the young flock eatin it lol!!!

I don't think that all Christmas trees are fireproofed. First, it would cut out an extra bit of income for the lots. Secondly, I don't think any grower would want to be held responsible by claiming it and something happen.

A bigger concern is the fact that many trees are sprayed green. Some trees naturally turn a lighter green/yellow in the fall and the growers spray paint them 'Christmas' green to keep the customers happy.

Gee, now I feel kind of bad about what I posted. That was what they told me at the tree farm, when I asked what the trees were sprayed with. Even the ones we cut ourselves had visible spray on them, in the years we cut pines, instead of firs. They were sprayed in the field, where they were growing, after it was decided which areas were going to be harvested that season. The pines had dye on them, that you could see, which was why I asked about it. They told me that they were also sprayed with flame retardant and that it was a common practice. I guess not. Sorry I posted incorrect information.

we just called our home depot and asked if their trees were treated with flame retardants or dyes. they said no, they get the trees locally and their supplier does not treat with anything. so we're going to throw the tree in the run now!

Don't feel bad, WoodlandWoman, you gave good advice. There are so many regional differences and I am sure there are many tree farms that do treat there trees with dyes and/or flame retardants. It's good that you warned us because many people (my self included) may not have known about this practice and now we know what to look for.
