Are eggs really "babies..."?

Once the egg is put into the conditions necessary to hatch I believe it is a chick. Everything has started growing, everything has started the processes of life. Eggs are dormant until put into the hatching environment. Now, eggs that I'm planning to hatch would be, in my mind, chicks...not because the officially ARE chicks, but because I intend to place them in the hatching environment so they can start developing. My firm belief, with ALL living things, is that ONCE the fertilized egg is in the place it needs to be to grow/starts growing it is officially life.

I'm not one of the people to call unincubated eggs 'babies', but they would potentially be babies if I stuck them in the bator. Which is why I can understand why someone would be upset about their babies, because they would have been babies once they first started growing...but they never got a chance to, cause they broke...

I believe it is just an egg until the phase right before they hatch. Then it could be considered alive but i personally wouldn't count my babies till they hatch.

The ones I have every intent of incubating and raising into a chick and later a pet, yes, the eggs I see as babies-to-be.

The ones I already plan to make into breakfast or a cake batter...no.

I guess it's all ones own feelings about it. I wouldn't imagine being snarky if someone had a different view than mine, but I can count on two hands how many times people have tried to make me feel stupid for how I view it.
