Are hybrids chickens also good to eat?

:frowHi natyvidal. I got into this thread a little late but you've gotten some great answers here! I have a lovely Mennonite lady in my area who takes my live cockerels and dresses them out for me for $1 each. We got three cockerels with our order of day-old pullets and somewhere around 13 weeks they became little gangstas, so off to Mrs. W's they went. They were EE's and man, were they delicious! I put them in the crockpot (one at a time, of course, I think there's one left) and made dumplings. If I can help it, I will never again buy Pilgrim's Pride or any other commercial chicken. There was plenty of meat on this bird for our family. I cooked it till it fell off the bone then cut it up. The aroma was DROOLING delicious. I will buy straight-run after this just to have cockerels to put in the freezer. Fear not! Enjoy!

Different ways to do this. I generally hatch my own but when I order from a hatchery I order the pullets I want as pullets and fill out the order with cockerels as cockerels. it's generally cheaper that way plus I get what I want. One time I got 7 pullets from a straight run order of 7. That could as easily been 7 cockerels out of 7.

I’m hoping to process my first cockerels this year. @aart @Folly's place @BantyChooks @Compost King have experience processing their own birds.
I stick mine in the pressure cooker and then use the meat for soups or maybe a nice chilli. I haven't used the DP breeds for, say, sandwich meat, at least as of this date. It adds a huge amount of flavour. I use the carcass for chicken stock.
