Are people really this ignorant about chicken biology?

Aside from being raised around chickens and kind of wanting to raise some now I thought having pets was learning and caring for them. Some people have never had cats for instance and Have no idea about how to care for them. My brother had snakes as a kid and could tell you anything about them. He knows nothing about chickens and might be one of those who has a misconception of their biology.

I love to tell people about chickens. I don't like to think I am superior because I have more information on a subject than they do. The nurses you spoke to might know a lot more about human biology than I do. I just know a little more about chickens than they do.

Ummm...I thought that was elementary?

That is in elementary, of course... how do you get through elementary, then high school, then college, then post-grad, and STILL not have been correctly taught, was my point.

Oh, I'm sorry if I came across wrong but I agree with you. I see those words used incorrectly all the time and I learned those words in elementary school and thought they were basic words. I think we all type to fast and I think a lot of people don't reread before posting. I know I have hit the submit button when I meant to press the preview and have to go back and edit because the spell check in my brain didn't work the first time around. Sometimes it takes a different view to see a mistake.

You're absolutely right. The actual delivery of the sperm is completely different. From reading this posts it seems like a lot of the knowledgeable people are lacking a small part of the knowledge.

I worked with a doctor once that couldn't even microwave popcorn, always had to use full service at gas stations cause he couldn't figure out how to open the gas tank and was so socialy inept it was painful to watch. I thought he was a real idiot. . . . . . until I educated myself . That man is brilliant. One day there will be a cure for MS and he is going to be responsible. So what if he couldn't microwave popcorn? If he finds a cure I don't think anyones going to care.

BTW I'm a nurse and I am not always all that bright when it comes to certian things but in the last 5 years I've saved 7 lives and I hope I have given comfort to lots of families in difficult times.

Just my 2 cents.

Ok, guess most people think a egg needs to be fertile to hatch, well guess what not honey bee eggs, they hatch out to be males.

Had a man in his 30s, ask me in the pet shop when i was selling easter chicks, and duckling, which was the chicks. ????

Take snails, it only takes one. As they lay and fertilize the eggs.

I love that one - I'll have to try it next time somebody asks me if you have to have a rooster to get eggs.

Somewhere I heard a statistic that (and don't quote me) ~80% of the earth's population lives in the city/suburbs, leaving ~20% living in the "country"... there's a LOT of people out there that don't know about this stuff. As the economy slumps, and people try to become more self-sufficient, I believe we'll see a rise in the awareness of all things on the farm. At least I hope so. I see the ignorance in my own stepsons... they shun fresh squeezed orange juice because it tastes funny and has pulp in it. They're used to Tang, or some other reconstituted fake powdered dehydrated concentrated fruit drink. I grew up in a rural community, with chickens and ducks and a big garden... no video games, very little TV, and that was black and white... anyone over 45 knows what I mean. I knew about this stuff at a young age because I lived with it. Most kids these days only have access to it in school, and with all the video games, texting, etc, I'm not surprised that these common misconceptions are running rampant. But I agree with Dave. Don't laugh at them in their faces... educate them, and then pat yourself on the back for your good deed.
