Are Salmon Faverolles noisy?

Great thread! I'm excited to get my first Salmon Faverolle. It's good to know what to expect. My neighbourhood has lots of noisey chickens so I don't have to be too concerned about it.

Amanda, just wondering how your Fav hen ended up in the noisiness department. I'm worried because we live on a somewhat narrow lot and though our one side of neighbors yappy dogs are probably much louder than most hens, I don't want an extra squawky hen bothering anyone in the morning.

I'm also worried about a single Fav getting picked on. I saw you got the most docile, supper fluffy breeds, so I'm assuming they get on well. While we have also picked out generally docile, calm and quiet breeds: a Buff Orpington, a Dorking (my husband's choice), a "Rhode Island Red" (hatchery so really RI-NH cross) and either an EE, Ameraucana or Cream Legbar depending on availability (my son really wants blue-green eggs). I've read that the Rhode Island often pick on feather legged breeds especially Faverolles :/ I was thinking about getting another feather legged friend to even things out, either a Black Copper Maran (chocolate eggs!) or a Cochin (your blue chick was soo cute!). I figure between the shared muff with the EE or Amerauacana, the extra toe on the Dorking, another feathered footed breed and the super sweet Orpington, the Faverolle might not seem like such an outcast.

I could just pick a New Hampshire or Golden Buff (sex link) instead of the Rhode Island (though they are the only ones that are reddish as babies!) But now reading about sound issues others have had, plus many people disliking hatchery Faverolles, I'm wondering if I should cancel that one and pick another breed... We have pre-ordered four chicks for April 21st from Meyer, the Dorking, Buff Orp, RI and Fav, the first three I ordered first then added the Fav a week later, so she would be easy to cancel, it's just kinda breaking my heart, but I'd rather get one later than risk any issues. A Black Australorp is also in the running if we don't go with a Maran or Cochin, we would like one dark one.

Any thoughts on either the nosiness or picking on from anyone would be appreciated.

I've read alot of conflicting stories saying that they are and aren't loud, someone else mentioned that the hens are only loud when there's a rooster and they are competing for him, does anyone know if salmon favs would be quiet if there's no roo and just other hens?

Hi, I don't know if it is too late to answer your question or not Sire12 about the noise level in favorelle hens. I was brought to this thread for that exact reason. I have 4, 3 of them are wonderful and very sweet, they only make noise when they are laying or excited for treats. One of them is louder than any rooster I have ever owned and I don't currently have a rooster with these girls for them to compete with. They have never had a rooster in the coop or run area. She just screams bloody murder at random times of the day and drives us crazy. It is just non-stop, sometimes she'll go for a good 30-45 mins without a break. Most of the time throwing her a snack or paying attention to her shuts her up for a few seconds, but before the food or attention is gone she is screaming again. We have 11 hens including her, it's a mix between ameraucana, speckled Sussex, and the Favorelles. I'm thinking perhaps because there has never been a rooster she felt it was up to her to have that role. Someone before mentioned theirs had a loud screechy almost like nails on chalk board noise, that's pretty similar to the noise our girl makes.

Hens are all individuals. There are going to be noisy and quiet examples in every breed and mix. Some want to be wallflowers and others love to listen to themselves non-stop. Having a rooster will make no difference in their noise level.

I'm going to be getting a Salmon Faverolles in the spring, and I'm wondering if she will be noisy? I really can't have a noisy chicken where I live, but a lot of people say that they are noisy
