Are Styrofoam Incubators Any Good?

That's what I got for my starter one....

Guess I never considered getting used, but my location probably isn't conducive (small town), so on Amazon it got pretty good reviews compared to others for what seemed like was most affordable.

Plus... well.. it was chicken math!    I saw some hatching eggs and thought I wanna try. So I ordered.  :D   But anxiety kept me back for fear I would set it up wrong for several months. :/  And finally I participated in a thread where someone was trying to hatch anything and everything without regard to age, breed, any thing. Then I wondered why am I holding caution up against the wall... while others are tossing it to the wind?! And tried my first hatch... :jumpy

Yay... 7 out of 9 were cockerels!!! And 1 of the only 2 females was taken by a predator. :he    Do you have plans for all them boys?  :drool

Ouch! I feel your pain. Two years ago I started my Silver Spangled Appenzeller Spitzhaubens. I wanted 4 girls and 2 boys. I hatched out 12. 10 boys and 2 girls! Lol

I am a young teenage chicken enthusiast, wanting to try to hatch. I know some people that would buy my roosters. I am going to breed Silkies. Thank you for your advice!!!!!!

Just know that it won't take long before people have all the Silkie cockerels their flocks can handle. And many people won't spend the time to process Silkies. So you may have to deal with the eventual... OK what do I do now..

My town is only about 5000 people with major cities being more than 90 miles away. So for me it would happen pretty fast.

My 3 Silkies are broody all the time... I would play havoc trying to hatch anything from that few. Wish I could get my hands on some nice looking Paints.

We enjoy our Silkies very much.

We are in Amish country. If a roo doesn't sell or can't be given away on Craigslist, the Amish will gladly take them. I use them as a last resort, but they are a resort. Also small town away from major cities. If you ever want to get paint silkie eggs, I can give you the name of an awesome lady that is focusing on paints (split to black) and she has some beautiful birds. All my birds came from her flock before she started focusing solely on paints.

That's great... I love it when nothing goes to waste! And I agree they ARE a resource.

Does paint split to black mean they will still come out paint or black like the lav split to black? Might LOVE to get some eggs! Please do PM me the info. Thank you!

Paint split to black the recommendation. It produces paints and blacks. Paint to paint from what I am told increases the chances of the pigment leaking in the feet. She has a fb page too and has a few public pics of her birds. I'll pm you the info.

Painted as in the Silkie pattern? If so, I love those! I would just like to get more Silkie hens so that I have a steady income of fertile Silkie eggs that I can hatch or sell as fertile eggs, I already have people asking me about this! I love my Silkie girl

Thank you! Which state is she in? I see that you are in NY, is that where she resides also? I wonder if she would ship.......

She does ship eggs when she has them. And she does an awesome job. She's in the NYC area, I'm up by Canada. She has sent eggs to a mutual friend in Wyoming and Georgia that both had awesome hatches. I'm sure by now she's sent all over, lol, but these were mutual BYC friends, so I know how well the hatch went. My own hatch had 14 go into lockdown with 12 hatching. This is one of my paints from her hatch:
