I got eggs out of the coop last night and then accidentally left them on the counter in the basement all night. It is fairly cool there and was wondering if they are still good. I did the float test on a couple and they both sunk to the bottom.

Eggs don't need to be refrigerated - grocery stores have given us that idea by putting them in the dairy section of the store, but traditionally they were kept in a basket on the kitchen counter. They will keep longer if they are in the fridge but I tend not to keep them refrigerated at all and they are still good after several weeks at room temperature.

My 80 year old brother in law told me once that back on the farm around 1940 in central Georgia they never refrigerated their eggs. Didn't have a refrigerator and didn't want to use the space in the ice box for eggs. They always used them within a couple of weeks. I asked an expert from the University of Florida earlier this year how long eggs would last not refrigerated and his answer was at least two or three weeks.
