Are there any actual scientific studies on Apple Cider Vinegar?

AND!! I just read that people that use ACV have more female chicks hatch than roosters,YUP thats what I read. Now saying that I have used ACV for 4 years now and I hatched out 9 babies and three are roosters.

Vinegar, including Apple Cider Vinegar has lots of beneficial properties. ACV does keep the algae down in the waterers for sure. I use white vinegar in all my cleansers, laundry detergent and some of my soaps etc. I make all my cleaning supplies. Don't know about the male/female ratio, but it sure won't hurt the chickens, so I say let's try it

SURE- Scentific fact. Wonder why the poultry industry dosen't use that to get more layer pullets than cockerels.

Didn't you know that it is a conspiracy by Big Ag to squelch the truth of Apple Cider Vinegar and Diatomaceous Earth?

I thought I read that world Peace broke out over ACV. You mean you might not believe that either? CONSPIRACY! and here I am with this big jug!

LOL seriously though it is good to give the girls. At the very least, it sure ain't bad!

Since you have a scientific bent, why not do a controlled study?

Lots of people post that they think it works. Have they tested it and published the results of their test? You could be the first!

Maybe set up two waterers. Add ACV water to one and plain water to the other. Maintain them under identical conditions. Track the growth of algae/slime. Publish on BYC!

I have a very small flock. I love experimenting but for something like this unless there is a VERY large sample size the data is not reliable. A problem with a single hen for any reason would skew the data far too much. Plus in order to make it truly scientific I'd have to cut out all other variables which means I can't give them lots and lots of yummy treats.

A simple solution for your need for scientific data vs. anecdotal data would be to just not use it at all. This would satisfy your doubts in one fell swoop. All of us who have been using it for many years with great benefits can continue to enjoy our anecdotal success and you can be satisfied with only scientific approaches to poultry husbandry. Seems like a logical solution to me!
