are there any foods that are toxic to chickens?

Beans have toxins in them. Cooked can be offered. Chickens very seldom will choose to eat things that are bad for them. With that being said I’ve seen them go after insulation foam....sometimes they are not the brightest crayon in the box.
I'm agreeing with you... Chickens seem to have a natural sense of what's good food found in the pasture, BUT when it comes to inanimate objects such as screws, wire, insulation, etc they somehow feel the need to try it. I don't get it but I don't worry about the selection of plants they want to eat from. I'd really like it if they'd quit eating my tomatillos, just a day or so before they are ripe.

I hope it's ok to ask, but @castrbl when you say your chick eats what you eat you don't mean that's all your chick is eating right? Treats are super fun to feed, but they really should be limited. I've seen some of your other posts so I know you have just the one chick. Your chick really needs a complete feed to make up most of it's diet. Are you offering grit at all?
no no she only gets a few bites. she eats insects, fruits and veggies, and her feed. i have been meaning to get grit but whenver we're out the stores that have it are either closed or not near us. probably will get some on sunday.

Fruits and veggies may be a great diet for an elephant but in large amounts fruits and veggies are not a healthy diet for a chicken. A hen will lay eggs whether she has her owners permission to lay eggs or not. Some of the very best veggies for a human are poison to a chicken and some of the most deadly poisons for us humans are in fact a tonic for your chicken. When we personify our chickens we are not doing your chickens or yourself any favors.

Some of the veggies that I read that people feed their chickens are great foods for humans but terrible eats for a chicken. Spinach, kale, and some other greens fall into that category. Some greens named result in a hen having a reduced ability to process calcium and all the calcium that a hen uses to make eggshells comes right out of her own bones. The oyster shells or limestone rock given to a hen to eat must first be deposited on her skeleton before that calcium is available to be used to make an egg shell.

So treat your chickens like you want to treat them but don't complain if your hen breaks down.
