are there any foods that are toxic to chickens?

Margaret A. Wissman, D.V.M., D.A.B.V.P. wrote this regarding onions, leeks, garlic, and chives:

"Allicin, which gives garlic its odor, is also a strong oxidant. In rare cases, this chemical can be dangerous and can cause Heinz body hemolytic anemia, as well."

"Although I have not seen any scientific studies performed on any avian species, there is the chance that disulfides could also cause this Heinz body hemolytic anemia in birds. For that reason, I feel that is unnecessary and potentially dangerous to feed onions, leeks, garlic or chives, as they don't contain any nutrients that are vital for the health of our pet bird. Why take the risk?"

:bow :goodpost:
And everyone thought I was crazy.
I know what I'm talking about.

Uh...

"Although I have not seen any scientific studies performed on any avian species, "

They're basing that off observations of mammals. Mostly we can't even get the same diseases as avians can, why would toxicity in mammals have any relation at all to birds?

It's not facts. It's conjecture using totally different organisms.

Can we talk about the items you posted about? and you should know I mean that in a nice way.:D
Sure go for it. I'm not insisting that I'm always right.
I fully admit that I was wrong about tomato fruit and cabbages. My mistake.
However, in my defense, I have read in many places that mushrooms and hot peppers are killers. I have also been told not to feed my birds onions and garlic and that pasta does not do them any good.
