Just curious. I know that eyebrows are raised at paying $5 for individual chicks, but compared to other animals - especially those kept as pets like dogs and cats - chickens are cheep cheep cheep.

Are there any particular breeds or perhaps individual show chickens that fetch a pretty price?

Maybe Lavender Orpingtons? They are extremely sought after right now...and I'm not just saying that because I'm completely in love with them

Any show quality bird will fetch a pretty price.. But if you're going to get them just to make money off of them i'd go with a rare/endangered breed. It may not make as much as some of the sought after breeds but at least then you could help with "bringing them out of the ditch"...

If i were you i'd go for real stuff, no breeds that have had other breeds crossed into them for new colors..

Word had it that a pair of started Coronation Sussex fetched $4,000.

While I'd not pay that much for chickens, if one wants good quality chickens one cannot expect he breeder to just give away for next to nothing something which has probably taken many years to develop.

I think that anyone will tell you that their 'pet project' breed is very valuable to them

I have BCMs and Lav Orpingtons...based on the prices I paid for these birds, I do consider them very valuable to me.
