Are there any truly "valuable" chickens/breeds?

I think it's just a dark skinned man holding a "specimen" if you know what i mean. I'm pretty sure I see other specimens in the drawers. it's just like collecting butterflies.

When you mention a "purpose that can't be discussed on this board" it reminds me that we drove to a poultry show before I got my chicks in order to familiarize ourselves with different chicken breeds.

There was an entire section of roosters - just gorgeous birds! - but the people there were completely different than the people in the section where the hens were. It was almost entirely Hispanic men, which seemed strange to me at the time. Now I'm wondering...

BCMs aren't officially recognized as a breed by the APA, yet.

As far as the OP's question, it depends on what value the breeder places upon the bird(s). Some breeds are more easily replaced than others, even with project fowl.

I know that

I am raising French standard birds.

But, was that real bidding, or was it just someone being dumb?

I'd think the rare breeds, that are in jeopardy would be worth more... Although, Like someone else stated, even silkies can bring a very good price depending on the breeder, and if the bird is SQ

I expect those are the ones I was thinking of. I didn't know the exact price....I heard it via others. Sounds like a couple of people really got bidding fever.

That would make sense if they were a breed from elsewhere with interesting traits. But if they are breeds which are not new to the country but have now become scarce it would be locical to think the reverse would be true. If people had wanted them they wouldn't have become scarce. Like Ixworths & Redcaps in UK.

Oriental longtails. Most are unavailable (in pure form) in the US. Onagadoris are so rare that most breeders/owners/caretakers are very reluctant to lose them.

Also, any form of PURE Jungle Fowl. Most Junglefowl blood today is diluted by other breeds of chickens.
