are there preventative measures for "pasty butt" and at what age does

I wonder if certain breeds are more prone to it.
None of my wyandottes ever got it even once while every single cochin got it at least once in the first week but not since then.
Maybe because they have fuzzy butts?

So, I'm just giving them an organic chick starter from Prince Corp in Mansfield WI and regular well water. Is that OK?

If not, my daughter is coming out from the city for Father's Day and we can spend the day wiping chick butts. It should be a great bonding experience.

If the vent is pasty wipe with warm cloth. If the vent is not covered just pull the pastiness off. The chick will peep real quick but it will not hurt it. Just pulls the fur out below the vent so that it will not happen again. Kind of like someone getting waxed. This has worked great for me with all the chicks I have raised. Just remember, DO NOT pull the pasteif it is stuck to the vent, it will injure you bittie.

Like getting waxed?!?!? That HURTS!

Is there any problem if I just use petroleum jelly as a preventative? How long would I do it for?

I, personally would not pull the down off the chicken. Soak his/her liitle butt in warm water, and crumble the poo off. If you need to take a little pair of scissors and clip a little of the down from below the vent. Vaseline is fine afterwards.
