We purchased 2 new silkie chickens today. On closer inspection one of the 'hens' has a sixth toe or spur.

She is 6months old. Doesn't seem to have a large wattle etc. But these weird 'toe-things' don't have nails.

Thoughts? Thanks.

WELCOME!

Looks like a spur to me... I think I can see the 5th toe just below it.

By the size of that spur... I'm gong to say that it is likly not a hen... and if it was, this bird is probably at least a year old if not two or three. My two year old roos don't have spurs that big. But spurs can vary within and between lines.

Hope you have what you wanted. If you can post a body pic, that may help.

Thank you for the quick reply. I have attached a full body photo... hope this helps.

We can't have roosters here so I'm hoping 'she' is a she.

Hen?

Only 6 months?

They sure look like spurs. Idon't know diddly about silkies- but I think if itwas a rooster it would definately be crowing by now. Or laying if it's a girl. How long have you had her? Sometimes they stop laying for a while when they go to a new home.

Yeah, that body is looking girly to me too, so I think you have an older hen. It is not uncommon for a girl to have a spur, and you got one, she's just not 6 months old.

in some breeds a female might develop spurs but take a look at those wattles
