I’m suspicious of 2 of my hatchery sexed birds.

Spudnut is a 6 week old Easter Egger. She is the largest chick in her clutch, larger than the BO. (The size difference was significant around 2-3 weeks but has evened out more now). Her feathers have come in cleanly like a pullet. Comb is a little pink, not a lot. I’ve heard you can sometimes tell gender by how many “peas” are on the comb, but I’ve also heard that’s not true for EEs since they don’t always have true pea combs. Anyone think they can tell if Spud is a boy or girl?

Next is Traci. She’s a 4 week old Silverudd’s Blue. Largest in her clutch of 4 Silverrudd’s so I do have some apples to apples comparison. She’s been the largest in the group since day 1, and currently has the largest and pinkest comb. She’s the most dominant and outgoing in her clutch. Any guesses on her?

Apparently I don’t have many good pics of her. I’ll try to add a few more today.

Here’s a few more pics. This is a good one to show Traci’s comb color vs Vera Ellen’s comb color. They’re both 4 wk Silverrudds. Although one of my other splash Silverrudds comb suddenly turned pinkish-red… if the color indicates male, I could have 2 males… but the combs aren’t large so there’s that. And Traci’s comb has been pink since about 2 weeks.

This pic shows the size difference between Traci (top) and Anniston.

And here’s another pic of 6 week old Spudnut just because.

We’re moving some birds around today, including moving some young cockerels to the bachelor pen. Spudnut needs to go to the bachelor pad for sure, right? That tail says it all.

For anyone who is curious, I’m growing less suspicious about Traci, and she will be staying with her clutch for now. But… plot twist… Norman Gene (formerly known as Marilyn Monroe) is moving to the bachelor pad. Norman is the splash Silverudd’s Blue in the next 2 pics.

Below pic shows Norman in the background. The blue laying down is Anniston (pullet) and the blue standing up is Traci (questionable).

I bought 4 hatchery sexed pullets in 2024. Got 75% pullets from Privett Hatchery

In 2025 I have bought 2 groups of 4 hatchery sexed pullets (2 different stores, unknown hatcheries) Right now it’s 75% pullets… or less if Traci is Tracey.

I have 4 more hatchery sexed pullets (Hoovers) that I just threw under my broody hen. I might be the curve killer on these 90% accuracy claims, lol!

I am so wary of gender predictions. I was told my sapphire gem at five weeks old was definitely a cockerel, but now at five months old I believe to be a pullet. She just has some dashingly red comb and wattles. On an unrelated note to your post, I have a seven week old chick that is strikingly similar to your Spud.

I have a suspicion that “Snow White” is actually a cockerel. That being said he/she is the most docile, gentle chicken I have.

Around 8 weeks now? They still look like pullets to me.
