I'm curious to know the answer to that question also! I am assuming that my 24 eggs will be reduced in number after I candle...but if not...I wonder also about room. I have read that some people use egg cartons ...I'd like to know how it goes without using egg cartons.

Question #2 for Brinsea users....the instruction book that came with the Brinsea recommends humidity at 40-50%. What is everyone setting theirs at? First hatch I set mine at 42 and it varied between 40-44 or so. Better to be on low side...rather than towards the 50? I set it up to 65% for hatching. I hatched out 6 out of 8 eggs and the 2 that didn't hatch stopped early on so I guess I did ok. I keep reading of the horror stories of "shrink wrapping" and drown chicks and with a bigger hatch this time...worry a little about the setting. Any input Brinsea users??

I think that humidity depends on where you live as well. I live in the desert so dry hatching for me doesn't work very well. I end up with too large air cells so I'd recommend hatching dry or semi dry to keep a close eye on either air cell size to make sure it doesn't get overly large or weigh your eggs. I've done lockdown at 55-60% and ended up having drying out of the membranes. This go round I've done humidity at 40-45% instead of 25-38ish% and lockdown starting at 65% instead so far have one chick out, can't really see anymore pips. I'll open up eggs mid next week after doing a float test and see what happened to the ones that didn't hatch.

Now I am not sure if I already wrote it down here.... unfortunaly the baby chicks all died around day 18-19..... I called Brinsea and told them this was the 3th hatch wich has gone wrong. The lady on the phone said to bring the bator back to the store where I bought it from. So I did, they said to check out the machine because we are thinking of a defect on the machine. I was very sad about my welsummer chicks, so near but yet so far

.

I hope all hatches went ok for everyone else and I am waiting for the results to come back from the bator.

Wow...that is really sad. Let us know what happens. I just decided to leave my humidity at 40-43 range since I did ok the first batch. I'll see how it goes.....

My Brinsea ECO just hatched 12 , all eggs (shipped) which made it to lockdown - 12 out of 18.

Brown Leghorns, they hatched quickly quietly with no drama, just zipped and popped out from the shells.

The whole hatch started on day 20 and commenced within 24 hrs.

It was impressive.

Here is my April hatch along entry. 12 out of 16 shipped Bearded Silkie eggs hatched.

My humidity usually runs in the mid 30's most of the time. Honestly, I didn't even have a hydrometer this time in the bator, I just filled one trough and topped it off about every day. Then at lock down I switched over to another Eco 20 bator, and filled both trays and my humidity levels were 45, and when one hatched it would go up to 50 to 60, then drop back down to about 45 again. At lockdown I do use a hydrometer, but not during the first 18 days anymore.
