Are You Stocking Up On Food?

I really hope your not mocking me...it's wayyyyy to late for that !!hahaha..

. and no, I don't watch tv, well...not much anyway...

For dry canning, I picked up a vacuum pump off of EBay. I also picked up a mason jar adapter that is used for food savers. As a test of the pump's ability to pull a vacuum, I took a mason jar lid and poked a hole in it. Over the hole I placed a piece of black electrical tape. I then pulled a vacuum on the jar and when the pump sounded like it wasn't pumping any more, I pulled the hose from the pump. This allows the pressure to normalize in the adapter and the jar will seal. I then put a canning ring on the jar and screwed it down tight. In a bucket of water, I placed the jar with the top side down and pulled off the tape. This allows water to flow into the jar until the internal and external pressures have normalized. Once finished, you can take the jar and see how much water is in the jar. This will give a rough idea of how much air has been pumped out of the jar. In my case, there was about 1/2" of air in a quart jar. It isn't a perfect vacuum, but it was over 95% of a vacuum which is very good imho. It costs more to do it this way, but I can line up a bunch of jars and just go down the line vacuuming jar after jar after jar. Pasta, beans, rice, etc... No problem.

If anyone is interested in the process I can put together a quick video.

Any of you watch a television show called "Revolution" that premiered on NBC this past month? Some phenomenon suddenly happens where all electronics quit working one day... even cars and batteries quit working. The population goes into unrest and factions form, bands of briggands form, etc. I'm not mocking you guys, promise, I actually like that show a lot and this thread just reminds me of it. It's a big fictional show with some interesting characters.
I watch and like that show too. Let me remind ya'll, just how many thousands of years the human race lived WITHOUT ELECTRICITY!!!!! Are we really so stupid as a race (human) that we cannot survive if it means we actually have to WORK, actually have to do something for ourselves?? For the majority of us on here, cut the lights off, we'll get by. But for the vast majority of our fellow humans, it would be a sad day.

I like to pick the show Revolution apart.

Sorry, I can't help it. Like everyone has some really nice cross bows. Just who knows how to make them? And they all are wearing decent clothing. It's been 15 years, all the ready made clothes are rotted by now, so where did the clothes come from? Not to mention the sharp swords all the guys carry. Really? And just who made those? I guess a lot of preppers survived the TEOTWAWKI (the end of the world as we know it) so THEY could make all the hand tools and weapons, because you darn well know 99.9% of the people now have no survival skills.

What a lot of people don't know is that in the very early 1900's, cloth was recycled. People just didn't throw away clothes when they got old, they reused anything that they could in one formor another.

thanks for the info on oven canning dry goods... it was very helpful! I've been wondering if there were a more cost effective way to save the dry stuff vs... buying oxygen absorbers and sealers for bags..

I think I'll try doing this with my dried herbs!

Can you use green bean, beans for anything (other than seeds next year). we had a bunch get over ripe and are now just sitting on the dead plants.

And when even the recycled cloth is unusable, it went to the "rag pickers" in the UK. The rag pickers would pick apart the rags and spin it into thread and weave new cloth from it. This cloth was really not very good but it was cheap and people got clothes that otherwise wouldn't have been able to afford it.

(a) I have clothes that are 11 years old that I still wear. And I'm sure I will wear them for several more years! Actually, I have this fabulous crochet sweater that my mom wore in college. It must be at least 43 years old! I love wearing it still, though I admit I am very careful with it. And 2 shawls that belonged to my great grandmother that are 65-70 years old. I wore one yesterday to church. And all of her aprons that survived---though they are in poor shape, I still have them. And she recycled all of her old cloth/clothing into quilts. I have on that has some of my great grand father's over-all fabric that is 85+ years old. So the clothes probably wouldn't have rotted in 15 years. Just sayin.

(b) I know lots of people in several branches of the military. They go through rigorous survival training, so chances are good (just like on the show) that lots of the people who will be thriving and taking charge will be former military.

(c) Also, I live in the sticks in the south. I can name two dozen men and women right now (without struggling to think about it) that are not "preppers" but like to go out into the middle of no-where and rough it for a couple of days JUST FOR FUN! They will make it just fine---they've been training their whole lives!

(d) As for weapons, if a prisoner can make a weapon out of a spoon, I'm SURE some metal worker can put 2 and 2 together and come up with a way to make swords and machetes without much trouble.

As for the crossbow she carries, I agree that it's impractical. I have looked at and tried out one just like she uses. It's not so un-realistic that she would have it, it's more unrealistic that she would even carry it---it's designed to be an easier load, but it's still a big deal just to pull the string on any cross bar. I'm pretty strong, but it takes a good bit of strength and energy. The bows people would most likely carry are going to be long and re curves.

I think your average pencil-pushing, posh-raised, city-dwelling Joe and Jane are s.o.l. But I think there are a lot of people that will pull together and get things done. I do think the south has the advantage though. Warmer climate=less time spend prepping for winter with heat and food + longer growing season. We have an abundant supply of good-ol' boys that won't freak out. It's their dream come true.

Just my thoughts and random ramblings........

Talk about recycling *everything*: a friend of mine who grew up in a formerly rural area north of Atlanta, told me that back in the 1930s - 50s, whenever someone needed teeth and couldn't afford to do to a dentist for them, they went to the local funeral parlor. Seems it was the custom for the families of the dear departed to have the funeral director save them and give them to anyone in need.

Talk about going green!

It is amazing what people throw away..I like visit the salvation army, goodwill and other second-hand shops. Don't have to, but it just makes cents$
