Are You Stocking Up On Food?

TexasLisa .... Unable to copy your comment on oven canning . Ive read up on it also & was given recipe by older friend who claimed that is how they have always canned venison ... After getting much feedback from others regarding it , figured the price was too high in risking my familys life to can meats this way . I need to invest in a pressure cooker to can meats & veggies . Fruits, cucumbers- pickles & tomatoes can safely be canned with just hot water bath .

I use the hot water bath for my jams, vegetables, salsa, etc. I have never canned meat. I might use the 'oven canning' method for my dry goods (flour, beans, rice, etc.). It would give me more space in the freezer.

I have never used a pressure cooker. I can still remember my home ec teacher telling us how they would EXPLODE!!

Lisa :)

Even with the old style pressure cookers, that almost never happened. With the new ones, the risk is so low as to be almost non-existent...unless you turn it on high and leave the house for a couple hours or something. The new ones have vents that are designed to come apart if the pressure gets too high, so just the vent stopper comes out. My pressure also has a dial on it so I can tell exactly how much pressure is in it, and can adjust as necessary to regulate it. I use it for all vegetables and meats.

I asked again an she does not remember a cannier blowing up now. She is 85 now. She said she does remember her mom canning outside, she open the cannier an removed the jars while still hot to hurry up an get a second batch going. Water dripped off of a tree from an earlier rain an hit a jar, making all the hot jars explode, badly burning my great great grandmother an cutting up my ant Martha.

So follow the rules

I have a link I will copy and put on here, can't remember the guy's name but he has some really wonderful tips for self survival and good foods and other things to keep us healthy. You know the one thing he said to get and keep a good supply of? Socks. Good ones. He said you can never have too many pairs of socks and you sure won't have time to make them when hard times happen, if they do. . .let me see if I can copy and paste . . .http://www.naturalnews.com/ is the website. He has a LOT of other stuff on there, some political too, but good common sense stuff.

I have been saying for the last 2 years to stock pile. IF you can't garden, then take $20 every month and buy staples you can freeze or seal tight and keep just in case. Rotate what needs to be rotated, and find a spot in your home that you can use as an "extra" area for storage.

Our midwestern states are going to be hurting when the trucks and trains shut down because of overhead and fuel prices . . .where do we get most of our food? It's trucked in . . .when these independent truckers shut down, we are too. My nephew is a trucker and he and 5 other drivers are waiting right now for loads. . .there aren't any . . .so its beginning.

This has nothing to do with who is in the white house; or this is my opinion. We have let congress ruin this country with their big raises and vacations and health insurance that makes the basic good plan look like nothing . . .I personally don't care who is in the white house, (I vote) because I worry more about taking care of my family in the here and now than who is trying to run this mess of a country. If more of us start taking care of ourselves and not relying on all the gov. stuff we will be so much better off. . .not trying to start a debate, just the way I feel about the gov. right now. Who needs em'?

I want to share this with my friends, you explain this much better than I can to them. They just don't see any of it.

Watch this, the graphics are horrible, but the logic is there. Now insert China into the equation.

Mea culpa, I forgot the link.

I have a hard time taking anything seriously that references martial law in the manner that it was used in the comments for the video. It needs to be clarified that Martial Law is a procedure used in Congress and not what most people think.

From the center for bdgets and policies.
http://www.cbpp.org/cms/?fa=view&id=548

"Under the martial law procedure, longstanding House rules that require at least one day between the unveiling of significant legislation and the House floor vote on that legislation — so that Members can learn what they are being asked to vote on — are swept away. Instead, under “martial law,” the Leadership can file legislation with tens or hundreds of pages of fine print and move immediately to debate and votes on it, before Members of Congress, the media, or the public have an opportunity to understand fully what provisions have been altered or inserted into the legislation behind closed doors."

The use of martial law in congress is never justified imho. I just wanted to make sure that people understood what it is and that it is not what they think.
