are your dogs and chicken friends

My jack Russell terrier thinks he is a chicken !
That's hilarious cause one of our hens thinks she is a dog!

"Big Momma" is a Cornish Cross left over from last year. I had a really hard time breaking Levi, our red catahoula from killing chickens. Since he was bred to hunt wild hogs it wasn't a huge shock to us but his predator drive needed to be shut down none the less. After he was sufficiently broken I decided to keep a hen around (we didn't have layers at the time) just to keep him in calm around them. It worked like a charm. They take naps together during the day and sleep in the SAME dog house at night. Big Momma has even taking to trying to 'bark' at the cows in the next pasture. I wish I had it on video. It sounds like a really angry cluck accompanied by raised neck feathers and all. When we added four layers to the flock and two roosters Levi didn't bat an eye. All the new hens and the two roos sleep together but Big Momma always goes back to the dog house to sleep next to her buddy.

I have a very gentle dog, but she gets very excited around the chickens and I think she might hurt them if she was left with them alone. The chickens on the other hand, don't even seem to notice the dog. If she gets really close to them, they just peck her right on the nose

(which seems to just make her more excited).

All of our animals have what I call a peaceful coexistence. However, it started out a little rocky. Our Corgi who was 6 at the time did kill one of our first chickens. He received a spanking and some very loud scolding and since then has never killed or chased another bird. Now he enjoys trying to smell their behinds and eating chicken poo. Although, the chickens don't enjoy his invasive greetings they all tolerate one another. The cat on the other hand loves chasing the chickens but has never full on attacked any of them.

I'm very lucky my Akita Mac behaves around the chickens. Yes he will chase them occasionally, but it doesn't go anywhere. They will squat for him and he will give them a good licking. He loves to visit them in their coop and will steal he eggs if I don't keep an eye.

We brought our chicks home last night, and with 2 dogs we are going to try to make them all good friends. 1 dog has free range/roam of our property and he is a choc lab mutt, the other is always on a leash as our property isn't fenced and she would chase whatever animal she could and just keep going and going. So we did a slow intro last night, let them sniff everything, then showed them the chicks in the brooder. We'll slowly introduce them with a little face time every day. Both dogs are VERY interested and happy about the chicks so far. They constantly sit at the door to the room with the brooder and whine to go in.

Here is Riss, our rescue special checking out the new girls.

Now my problem is this..... I'm going to look after a Husky for three weeks.  She has no command controls whatsoever!!  I'm actually afraid of her getting near the chickens, cat and rabbit.  She is always over excited when I do visit her but calms down when I ignore her.  Now does anyone have any suggestions how I deal with the next three weeks?

I've a feeling she'll be on a leash 24/7...... :/

Yikes that sounds like a disaster in the making. How well do you know this dog? Huskies tend to have a very high prey drive and are more independent than other breeds. They don't feel the same need for our approval as other breeds. I know a couple from work who have killed cats, small dogs, skunks, racoons and a porcupine. That was an expensive vet bill... The female would happily kill anything smaller than the male husky she lives with. I don't want to scare you, not all huskies are as intense as those 2, but I'd be super careful! Leash - yes and have some where to lock her up when you can't watch her or hold onto the leash. They're really, really strong pullers (by design) so keep that in mind too.

Good luck

My dog and chickens are Not friends, but mainly because my dog is a sissie and is scared to death of them

. Granted, my dog is barely bigger than the chickens but its still funny. But i'd rather have it like it is than a dog that attacked chickens
