are your dogs and chicken friends

I have 3 dogs and they are fine with my chicks. My boxer loves to smell them and really wants them to play with him but he forgets he is almost 100 lbs and the 4 chickens together aren't even 1 lb. my Maltese doesn't really pay attention to them but he has been known to bully anything smaller than him so him and the boxer are always supervised. My cocker on the other hand is in total love with them and he thinks they are his babies. He is my babysitter when they are having outside time or I'm cleaning the brooder. Which shocked me cause I've had cockers for over 16 years and I've never met one that wouldn't kill any small animal or bird in a heartbeat. I'm trying to talk my hubby into getting the cocker some ducks for his bday next month ;) it's his fav dog so I figured its worth a shot lol

Glad your cocker is so good with them... it is a joy to see them when they are like that. Get some pics of the cocker with his 'babies' and send them to hubby in an email each day... wear him down! LOL

My dog would love to get to know my chickens better, lol he can spend hours watching them inside their run. Fortunately we have a chicken " super max". Our retired racing greyhound doesn't give a fig about the chickens, it's the rabbits that he is longing to get better acquainted with. Lol

Our meaties seem to love Mindy... anytime she is nearby there is usually one or two who settle in with her or follow her around. This one in particular sticks close to her... it was quite put out because in this shot Mindy is watching some chicks in the brooder area, she just found her best view was from the meaties area! LOL

Checking out her new charges...

Looking for a soft spot to lay... I have a pic somewhere of this bird on her back... but after it got bigger it couldn't climb up on Mindy anymore... so it fluffs her back hair and then lays down against her side instead.

He actually said yesterday he wanted to get some ducks. So far it looks like we are getting 1 welsh harlequin, 1 Cayuga, and 1 blue Swedish shipped the 2nd or 3rd week of aug. I already have a order for 6 chicks coming aug 5th so I'm trying to space them out,

My dog is very protective of my garden and will guard the chickens. I don't know how she would be if they were loose though. They stay in their run because I live in a built up area. My cats take no notice of the chickens..

not a great picture.

My Shih Tzu LOVES my chickens. I think she thinks she is one of them. lol My littlest Chihuahua can't stand them and I have to watch him because he will chase them. My Chi is only about 4lbs but thinks he's a brute. lol Here is one of their "bonding" moments. Lola thinks she's part of the group. Ha...

it's so funny how some dogs actually like them and others can't control their prey instinct. I think I may be able to train my dogs to tolerate and learn to live with the chickens while they free roam, but am afraid of the first encounter. I've worked too hard and am becoming too fond of my chickens to beableto to bear watching a dog hurt one of them.
